So people are thinking this is a permanent move now not just a temporary thing? I have my doubts

No one really knows yet. I'm sure this will all come out at some point. Personally I think the chip shortage is an opportunity for MB to reset and pivot towards converting all ICE V8's to hybrid in 2023. Including the G lines.

The requirements are annual 1.5% improvements in fuel economy and emissions reduction for the 5 years spanning 2022 through 2026. The lunacy is of course that no manufacturer redesigns an engine annually to meet intermediate targets. So MBAG (and probably a few other manufacturers that don't exclusively sell compact cars) are tasked with 7.5% improvement standards that must be achieved by 2026 (unless of course the earlier 5% annual improvement requirements are reinstated, which might induce MBAG and others to fold up their tents and leave country).
For an entertaining read, see https://www.federalregister.gov/docu...tnote-1-p24174. While I can't speak for others on this forum, I can say it would take me until 2022 to read through this document without any hope of understanding most of it.

So this was well in the works before this “this current administration”, as he claimed. Sounds to me like a natural progression to more efficient vehicles, not party politics.

This also sounds like a Mercedes AG Problem. Haven’t read of any abrupt cancellations from Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, BMW, Audi.

I think it's a permanent move -- no more U.S./Canada V8s. It's difficult to reconcile the appearance a couple months ago of the 400 "special edition" G63s any other way. If material shortages were on the horizon, why would MB throw what it had into 400 vehicles that hadn't been ordered? I think MB wanted to use up its V8 inventory and get them into the U.S. before 2022 when the standards change. And the secrecy? Announcing the end of the V8 would have caused stampedes at the dealerships. Maybe this is why MB has been holding back MBUX, Apple-Play and a couple other features/updates -- it wants to use them to lessen the impact of the 3L engine, while holding the line on the base price. But one thing for sure -- MB can't just turn off the spigot on 17 of its best selling and priciest rides for a full year, and survive competition in the luxury class.

2026 G63
Interesting. A quick search shows that Mercedes has patented the monikers G43, G53, and G73, along with the EQG trims.

Not too hard to imagine the G63 becomes a G73 hybrid. Not sure what they will call the non-AMG version as I don't think they will do a V6 G.

The EPA has been setting automotive emission standards for the past 50 years, so pick the politician or bureaucrat you like the least and point your finger (lol). The way the EPA writes its rules is mind-numbing. As I understand it, compliance with certain rules is a function of how many cars a manufacturer produces. The smaller brands might well fly under the radar, while the major brands get pummeled. Fuel economy and emissions are based on fleet averages. Sell too many big engine cars and you get hit with penalties.

Why not? I can see a G53 with a hybrid 6...easily. Never thought the C63 would have a 4 banger, but it will. At this point, everything is on the table. We are witnessing a historical shift in MB as they transition to their hopes of going full electric.

If a G73 becomes reality....perfect time to do a market price adjustment

If I was a betting man, the next G is a G53 (some sort of six cylinder hybrid). Same torque / power as 63....with an option for a G73, but then again I thought the GT73 would be out by now

Its a game of averages, and the AMG V8 lowers the fleet average.....and when you have a fleet of less cars being produced....the big polluters become a problem in the equation

Ill be keeping mine and my wifes G63 until the future is setteled....you can buy up to 10 years warranty, ill figure ot out when warranty is up

I suppose it's possible but in the past Mercedes has said the G will stay with V8s as that's what the buyers want. Of course things are subject to change as we've seen the past week or so.

I want them to disable the %$@*&!# lane keeping assist, but apparently they're deaf on that topic.

Just got an email from my sales rep at a prominent Mercedes dealer in Canada:

Production will not be in play for about 8 months of 2022

So 2022 production is not completely cancelled?

some dealers think that ordering will be resumed in mid 2022. Nothing confirmed yet

My dealer just told me that they closed out their wait list for the G63. Not taking any new orders and anyone who had a 22 order either got moved to an extra late 21 slot or canceled.
They are also hearing the same rumors of a hybrid replacement. Not sure if that will be permanent change or what but it sounds like it might be.

No way MBUSA kills the golden goose so hopefully they bring the V8 back for the G like they kept it for the S.

I wouldn't put much weight into what the dealers says. I don't think they know that much right now, particularly since this was out of the blue and even they couldn't see this coming. 2022 production for likely revamped 2023 model lineup. Don't expect the exact same power plants.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Obviously the G's are a cash cow for Mercedes but they also come at the cost of the company probably having to pay penalties due to its emissions.
They are now putting all of their stock into the new electrics and their flagship car: the new S-class hence why it is still getting V8's and has not had its production halted.

My theory is they get to save on penalties by halting all the other AMG's and V8 models for one year; during that time they prioritize their electric cars and the new S-class to get their markets off the ground and all the meanwhile us suckers will be hungry as ever when the G production resumes normality. Im praying this is the case and the G63 returns as that is what I put a deposit on and that is all I want. I suspect a lot of other G customers want the same thing so one or 2 more years of normal gas productions then switch to hybrid/electric G would be perfect but we'll see I guess.

Respectfully, I think you mean MB has "trademarked" these monikers, not "patented". Can you tell us your source of this info?

Yes sorry semantics. I’ve seen it called a patent and trademark online but you know what I mean.

All this works out for MB, there will be so much pent up demand that introducing V8's with hybridization will matter less. People will buy regardless. ICE without hybrid is likely dead. 2021 was the year.

Agreed. The reality is that many (if not, most) people buying these things don't really care that much about what is powering it. They are buying Gwagons for the looks and the fact its a status symbol. As long as they keep the same body, keep it relatively exclusive, and market the change as an upgrade, they will find success with whatever powerplant they stick inside of it.

Can't speak for others but it matters a lot to me! Im making the point of having this be my last burly engine before I make the switch to EV or hybrid wayyyyy down the line. It would be a deal breaker as Im only going through with my order if its a pure ICE G63 like the 21's.

The deal breaker is for those that are on both sides of the change. However for many the G will remain in high demand. Some flashy IG posts about a new power plant boosting increased performance and it will pick up where it left off. Selling way over MSRP and never looking back.

Ditto that -- but I'm fine with the smaller 3L IL6 turbo, if that becomes the follow-up. I'm still reticent about a hybrid or EQG -- I drive only about 5K miles/year, and wouldn't find any payback in either alternative to an ICE.
