MB suspending sales of 2022 AMG V8 models

Oh please. Has nothing to do with politics or the current administration. Last I’ve heard, Lamborghini, and other brands with even more powerful engines are not suspending 2022 production.

I've been using these forums as a resource for years but figured I might as well chime in with our experience so far:
02/2021 met with the dealer to spec our 2021 G63 and put down a 1k deposit and agreed to 10k ADM in writing.
07/2021 received a call from the dealer that we had an allocation and locked in our build which was scheduled to begin early 09/2021.
Today I receive a call regarding the production suspension for MY 2022 and that our build would still be proceeding but it definitely would be a MY 2021.
According to various contacts I have spoken with after production stops at the end of 12/2021 for the MY 2021, there will be no production until at least Sept/Oct of 2022 for MY 2023. This is the best guess based on their communication with MBUSA.
Furthermore, if you have an allocation that begins production in December, you will still receive a MY 2021 even if it is not delivered until 02/2022 or 03/2022.
So anyone hoping to still get a G63 or G550, you will need an allocation with a "build decade" no later than December 2021.

For an entertaining read, see https://www.federalregister.gov/docu...tnote-1-p24174. While I can't speak for others on this forum, I can say it would take me until 2022 to read through this document without any hope of understanding most of it.

From Road & Track's website:
"Mercedes-Benz has suspended production and sales of the majority of its V-8 models for the 2022 model year, per an internal document distributed to dealers earlier this week. The document claims that this pause will affect 17 model variants and will be retroactive to some 2022 model year cars already ordered.
The document was first alluded to on Reddit on Friday afternoon, then acquired in full by Jalopnik later that day. In it, the company claims that the decision comes as Mercedes-Benz prioritizes "its focus to comply with various global, external, and internal requirements," then alludes to supply chain issues hitting the US market particularly hard. The decision will halt sale of the following models:
C 63 S AMG Coupe
C 63 S AMG Cabriolet
GLC 63 S AMG Coupe
GLC 63 AMG
GLC 63 S AMG
E 63 S AMG
E 63 S AMG Wagon
Mercedes-AMG GT 63
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S
GLE580 4MATIC
GLS580 4MATIC
GLE 63 S AMG
GLE 63 S AMG Coupe
GLS 63 AMG
Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC
G550
G 63 AMG
Unsurprisingly, the impact on V-8 models in particular means that the freeze will significantly reduce the number of interesting cars Mercedes-Benz offers in the US for the upcoming model year. V-8 models represent a significant portion of all AMGs, Maybachs, and G-Wagens produced, all big-ticket performance and luxury offerings that would leave major holes in the lineup Mercedes-Benz dealerships can offer for 2022.
When reached for comment, Mercedes-Benz did not confirm the specific models on hold. A spokesperson did, however, confirm that a supply chain-related issue has led to a product offering change:
The Company’s prioritized focus to comply with various global, external and internal requirements, as well as several other factors, including but not limited to challenges in the supply chain, have an impact on the offering of the product portfolio in various markets.
Mercedes-Benz is exploring every opportunity to solve the challenges at hand as soon as possible.
We will be working closely with our dealers and customers to help alleviate any inconvenience resulting from delays.
Aston Martin also uses a 4.0-liter Mercedes-Benz V-8 in its V8 Vantage, DBX, and DB11 V8. However, a representative from the company tells Road & Track that the stoppage will not have an effect on their offerings."

This is the line from the bulletin that I find the most interesting.... "MBUSA will convert all impacted models to variants that are available for ordering as MY22 no later than August 31, 2021. Once the conversion is completed, MBUSA will send out a confirmation NCU. The conversion will not impact the timeline for configuration changes."
does this mean they will be announcing new V6 or Hybrid variants in the next 2 weeks? Its al very bizarre.

At the very least it will be a V6 + electric motor and have more horsepower & torque than current specs. V8 + elec motors would be glorious. And significantly better gas mileage is a massive benefit. Interior is overdue for an update

Agree the new Audi's with screens all over the place (even the passenger dash) is excessive and unappealing. MBUX with wireless Android/Carplay would be sufficient for me

Not necessarily
My 2022 got canceled, few weeks ago my sales person pushed me down the list in order not to get 2021 , since I have requested 2022, and placed a 5k deposit more than a year ago, at MSRP. Only by text verification, not written contract.
Now, he tells me that he doesn't know where my turn is on the list, he no longer has an access to it. Management is dealing w the list since everyone wants to be pushed up. MRSP is no longer guaranteed.
Real supply and demand market. I feel that Management will start asking for more $ to offer builds. For big companies, the decision is made at corporate level. $ talk. It makes no sense to sell a car at sticker or 20k above if the matket value is at 50 or even 100k above. Customers loyalty and honesty does not exist when $ talks.
Staff and managers are not happy about this, they are worried about survival in a market which already has a prodtion cut. The V8 was essential to MB to compete against BMW, Porsche, and even Lambo and Bentley SUVs.
Local dealers are asking 100k+ for existing new or build up. Price adjustments are regional, highest in CA. People are buying, I was following autotrader listing over the weekend, almost 50 % sold, the rest got a price increase. Low miles 21 are in the 260 range now, special white and red editions are in 290 to 300k. One private listing of a car in 180k range is up to 320k. Good luck to everyone in this adventure.

spoke to 6 dealers today…
Just sent offers to 3 dealers at $30k+… we’ll see if any bite tomorrow.
Dealers around me here are either 50k or 60k over but some of the cars have been sitting for weeks so it’s not like they are flying off the lots at these prices…
fun times.

Car and Driver now picking up this story and investigating it. Think that means it’s confirmed, no AMGs (and no G550 <— this truck shouldn’t have a 4L V8)
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...nes-gone-2022/
IMO this news broke before MB could put out a press conference about their new plan for more powerful, lighter weight, and more fuel efficient AMG engines using hybrid technology. Which is a pity because the future is tomorrow and regret was yesterday.

All of the auto pubs and blogs, as well as several business pubs, have picked up the story this morning, but all report nothing new as of yet. Surely at least one reporter has an inside line at MBUSA, so maybe something meaningful will appear in the next 48 hours. The MB News Channel memo seems to confirm MBUSA treats its dealers no better than it does its customers.

sorry but doubt your sales rep has any info right now and S class interior isn great… hate that tesla screen… not sure how i also feel about a hybrid 6 cylinder… we’ll see.

I don't think MB is committed to hybrid vehicles (too $$ to build and maintain), and it plans to make the leap to EQx models by mid-decade. I won't be surprised if G-Class offerings become the G450 and G53 (3L IL6) beginning next year, and the EQG beginning sometime before 2025. Right now, MB's strategy seems to be halt production of the G entirely, and then resume it in a reincarnated diminished form to a starving market anxious to snap up whatever's offered, while making great fanfare of its improved fuel economy.

As for the G450 and 53, I sure hope you're wrong. That would be quite significant. Even a 63 hybrid, which is quite likely will rattle many. Maybe a 53 and 63?
For ICE fans, we're running out of options at MB.
