MB suspending sales of 2022 AMG V8 models

Chip shortage was caused by many different suppliers facing natural disasters. One had to face drought, another faced flood and one other faced fire. No to mention due to the pandemic, people have been working at home so there is a high demand for high end chips used in computers, so suppliers prioritized those orders instead of less advanced chips that automakers use.
It also takes time and money to restart a production line.
I hope this answers your question.

All of this makes sense in terms of why it was disrupted. And the fact that it takes tie and money to restart a production line also makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is why the gap hasn't been filled after this much time.
Also, is there even anyone (from the media or elsewhere) trying to keep up on the progress here? It's practically impossible to get any updates. Seems to be a huge world impacting issue that people should be staying on top of, but they aren't.

I read another issue is when the economy tanked last March, automakers scaled back their chip orders, thinking cars would sell slowly, whereas electronic companies filled the gap. Once the automakers realized things were rebounding they were behind the game.
With that said this move points to an emissions issue. Chip issue would merely result in delays.

It is very strange from an organized company such as MB
The 2022 specification order guid was recently published and shared here in the blog in a different post. Then dealers got notified about this. Many sales staff do not even know this yet.
My guess is that the production will turn into hybrid and electric in the future.
Will be hard to understand how MB will remain competitive against BMW and Porsche.

Thanks for the reply. It does, partially.

Just hang on tight, this will be over very soon and everything is back to normal hopefully by the beginning of next year.
As for the gap, to be honest I don't think the demand died down yet even computers and some phone manufacturers are not getting their chips on time, so until they have their chips automakers won't get theirs quite yet.

At least Canada gets ILS+ (Adaptive High beam Assist +) although we legalized it since 2018, only till 2021 did they start including it. Perhaps USA may get the same treatment sooner rather than later.

Also, what are MB dealers going to even sell next year? If all V8 models (AMG and non-AMG) are discontinued for the full MY2022, then they're left only with lower margin models.
I have to believe some MB dealers will go under or get acquired as a result.
Harsh.

Hey Guys,
New member here!
Couple questions - I'm in Canada and I'm actively looking to get a 2020/2021 G63. Current prices here for a 2021 is around $299k CAD (brand new) from private dealers.
How do you think this news is going to affect prices heading into 2022? Good time to buy now? Lease? I'm getting quoted for a 2 year lease with a $200k CAD residual.
Also, can we still place orders now? Or is absolutely no G63s being produced next year? Does this only affect orders placed in 2022? Can someone help me understand please as it's quite vague.

Expect dealers to push wiper blades and tires at your next oil change (lol). MBAG will need to write them all compensation checks, unless Sprinters become the next must-have ride.

I'll speak to my rep tomorrow.
My only issue is, I've been told builds take 12 - 24 months... so how would it be possible for me to get a build in now for delivery by December? Are 3-4 month builds possible?

4 month builds are as short as it gets. 2 months from allocation to build and 2 months from build to delivery.
Any additional time beyond that is waiting in line for an allocation. In other words to take delivery in December you have to be given an allocation now. A 12 month build just means they expect your allocation to come up in 8 months.
I’m assuming they are building through end of December which means G’s will deliver through February 2022?
To get a build now you either gotta know somebody really well, be willing to pay a crapload of money, or get a time machine.
