I bet people in Austria go by the Magna Steyr rule much like those in the US track Waffle Houses. If it’s open things are okay but if it’s closed the crap is hitting the fan.

Waffle House is probably a better measure than MacD's drivethrough - when the line of cars is backed up into the street, the economy is booming, but when the line of cars is backed up into the street, the economy is crashing (lol).

I paid over MSRP at a dealer brand new. Slightly under $300k CAD.

Here is a real data point as of yesterday. Sold my '21 G63 for $245K to a wholesale dealer. MSRP was $157500 (no options) and it had 8500 miles. He had a buyer on the other end ready to snap it up at presumably a few grand markup.

I thought cars had to be sold for MSRP in Canada?

Any capital gains on that? Incredible!

What did PT Barnum say?

This is commonly overlooked, but disposition of an asset at more than its acquisition cost becomes a taxable transaction. And if you've 179'd it, or have been depreciating it as a business expense, there will be more tax due. Best to talk to your CPA while sitting down.

Yes I believe so - will be discussing all that with my tax professional.

Now granted this car had a waitlist even before all this craziness began but not too long ago it was very simple to negotiate a discount specially if it was sitting on the lot.
Im awaiting my allocation at MSRP, it will likely be a 23 and out of principle I wont pay a cent over MSRP. Others can disagree but I see people paying anywhere from $10k-$75k over sticker for this car and it just makes me laugh given all it would take is to have a year or 2 of patience. Even getting it at MSRP bugs me a little given the history I have with my dealership but cant change the demand for it. Will be interesting to see what those people will do with their car/watch/house that they paid 2x over retail for once normality resumes...

umm this simply is not true. Of course this may change in the future but I doubt it. As many of you know these cars were going above msrp for those who didn’t want to wait even before the pandemic. I waited 2 years on the list with an allocation at MSRP at a dealership who has never sold above msrp for those on the list — EVER before. Guess what, my allocation came through and they wanted $50k over msrp saying times have changed. I spec’d the car with a signed document 2 years ago. Turns out, not much can be done. They gave me some added benefits out of “respect” for the time I waited but those who think they are guaranteed high demand cars at msrp because they waited on a list for two years might be in for a surprise.

Ditto that -- want to ensure you pay no more than MSRP after a 2 year wait? Have your attorney draw up a purchase contract that stipulates delivery date, MSRP and a penalty clause for delivery delays and price changes, and that states any disputes will be settled in court (not in arbitration). Then take it to your dealership's GM and get him/her to sign it and have the finance guy notarize it. Good luck and let us know how this all works out for you 2 years from now.

Sorry no dealership would ever sign that.

Except it is because I know the GM of my dealership personally and the G will be my 7th car bought from him. He keeps me in the loop constantly, Im currently #17 on their list (started at #50 10 months ago) and he's assured me numerous times that he can't give me any discounts (which I got for all my previous buys from him) but that Im definitely getting it at MSRP.
Im also in Canada where I think its not allowed to charge over MSRP so dealers here have to get creative and prioritize their long term customers for their in demand cars. I know this because my GM stated since they cant charge over MSRP, they wont take any G order from anyone that doesn't have prior purchase history with them.
What happened to you sucks, but my situation is vastly different to yours.

In Canada it depends on the dealership. I've seen Mercedes dealers charge over MSRP.

2021 Night Black Magno G63
I was leaving my girl's place in Miami last night and some guy came up to me when I was getting the truck from the valet and asked me if I'd sell it. He was the owner of a car dealership that sells exotics. I have a 2021 matte black G63 with $182,300 MSRP. Mine was delivered in December 2020 and I have almost 12k miles on it. He offered me $250K on the spot. I told him I don't want to sell it as I love the car and don't want to drive anything else but that's pretty crazy right!? $68K over MSRP with almost 12k miles driven.

Back when radio theft was a big thing, people used to park their cars and put signs on their dashboards "No Radio" so thieves wouldn't needlessly break a window. Guess you need a sign that says "Not for Sale (at any price)". (lol).

I wonder how long this market will hold out, given all the uncertainty in the world. I was eventually planning on selling mine, but I really don't think the market will get any better than it is today.

That’s simply not true. Canadian new car dealers must sell new cars at msrp or less.

I thought you bought a used car from a used car dealer?

Interesting.
Is that some sort of mandate set by the Canadian government? That ish would never fly here in the land of the commerce.

Thank you! Meanwhile all the USA guys are trying to argue how smart their $50K ADM is in this market and how I will never get it at MSRP lol.
Tbf their market is maddening and would drive me crazy, specially if I was a long term customer down there.
