Sure there can be 4 year wait lists. Say a dealer knows they get 5 allocations a year and have 15 names on their list, that’s a three year wait.
The main problem becomes staff turnover and how strict does the dealer stick to the list. Surely not everybody commits to purchasing when their name is called as well.
Dealer has no reason to hype anything up. I told them I already have one, so just want to get on the list for another.

Articles in today's WSJ indicate (1) new car prices are up 11% over the past 12 months, (2) 87% of new cars are being sold at or above MSRP, (3) the feds and the Fed have increased the money supply by 40% over the past 24 months, and (4) overall, prices are up 10% since January.
MB dealers asking 2x MSRP for Gs aren't monopolizing insanity.

Incidentally, MB is not stopping production of the G63 in 2022, they are just flooding the US market with as many 2021 cars as possible before having to apply for DOT recertification for the 2023 model which will be produced in the 2nd half of 2022. Rest of the world will be receiving 2022 models while the US dealers sell all the piled up 2021s. In the last 13 years since the G class was officially imported to the US I never recall more than 100-200 cars for sale nationwide. Now we have more than 800, 2019-2021 for sale and dealers keep calling it a shortage. If this demand continues then the G class is officially the new S Class and you can expect MB to crank imports further from the current staggering 8000 units a year to 25,000 or more per year and regular production cycle updates every 4/7 years especially if the new S class does not sell as well. There is a new G wagon now at every corner and at every mall and every building.

The reason there are so many for sale is they are still selling on the used market for high prices and people that see dollars over having the vehicle sold their unit. I am sure most people that sold theirs didn't do it because of a possible bumper change or some other little gizmo inside. The G wagon will never be mass produced so much it's like a cookie cutter vehicle on every corner. It will stay allocated and exclusive. When they produce the last 21s at the end of this year, production stops for a while, and the used cars will be bought. There will be more demand and good luck getting a great deal after the new ADMs come out from dealers. If the factory can only produce so many a year worldwide, and the dealers only get so many, and demand is high, those used ones will look real appealing. And the lists and desirability will grow and continue.

It already is mass produced... Sure demand will remain high but supply will drastically improve. We're literally experiencing this with most goods and resources right now. Cars, watches, furniture, wood, metal, chips etc. are all hyper inflated at the moment so not sure why you think the G is in its own bubble. A Rolex turquoise OP (their entry level watch) is going for 5x over retail.... Hell even Kia SUV's are going over sticker. This will not last forever and the V8 will return. Don't listen to salesmen who have already gotten you to believe the hype so they can squeeze ADM's out of rich chumps. If you have an extra $50-$100k burning a hole in your pocket and you want to give to scummy dealership then by all means. Regardless of cash flow, if you have common sense you will wait these ADM's out because those same people will see their ADM's vanish when they go to sell down the line.

My guess is that most posters commenting that pricing is going to come down don't currently have one and are trying to talk pricing down because they want to get one without paying way over MSRP. I guess it's also fair to say that those of us that currently have one, are hoping pricing continues to go up. But setting aside personal bias, if production is going down for sure, (pause/stop in USA G-Class production after 12/31/21 -- No 2022 model year G-Class for USA), then doesn't it stand to reason that supply will go down and pricing will go up? I'm not sure what I'm missing. Also during the pause in production, more people will keep adding their names to the list (without names coming off the list because no deliveries are being made during this time). So the list grows and so does the dealer mark-up ? I guess general inflation is the other factor... how much of the price escalation is due simply to inflation. Apparently used car values in general are up like 30% in value from a year ago. Since the current G-Wagon MSRP was set over a year ago -- on a $150k car, that could account for about $45k alone. Crazy times.

New Range Rover arriving will cause G prices down? That's funny. I've owned two SVRs before I got my first G. I would never give up a G for a Range Rover. The new facelift is a longer Velar, nothing special. Back looks like a Kia. Looks are subjective, but they failed poorly on the back. They also failed miserably in making it unique. The "BIG Range Rover" should've been a special one and not just a bigger velar. Even the interior is from the Jaguar F Pace/Velar. The old ones look way better.

But why sell a truck whose value continues to increase for a fistfull of greenbacks that the Fed is determined to devalue 10% per year? Sell the truck, bank the cash and in 5 years you can afford a Hyundai. Thanks, but I'm keeping the G.

In this instance cash in and take the profit and then get another G later on. In a perfect world I'd get another allocation next year, but that depends on Mercedes starting things up again without delays and the dealer not being shady.
I can be without a G for 6-9 months for $50k+ profit, but over a year I'd rather just keep the vehicle. Probably the best play is to see how things look in the spring and enjoy it in the meantime.

Right now I'm thinking it's like a stock you bought at a good price and has gone up. Sell it and take the profits and when it drops again buy it back.

What I really want to know before doing anything is when will production start up again and what will MSRP be. I will get MSRP pricing when it’s my turn again, but I do wonder if people will jump the line by offering to pay more.

They can have their tax credits up front, then when they get their electric road tax usage fee to replace the loss of petro taxes, they will screaaaaaam lol. Battery technology and range, no big deal. I can plug in to a cactus out here in the desert lol
