Dash Cam in ‘21G550

Anyone have a Dash Cam front and rear camera in the G-Wagen? If so which one and why that one. Any pros or cons are welcome. Thinking about getting one. Thanks in advance.

I installed a Z-Edge Z3D and am pleased with it (www.zeroedgetechnology.com). Front and rear cameras, GPS, full motion high rez video, 12 hr recording w/128GB SD card, mp4 file format, PC playback app, $120 (Amazon). Dashcams are as many and confusing as OBD scanners. I got tired of endless comparison shopping and just took a chance.

I have had the Blackview DR900X-2CH installed on three different G63's and I am very very happy with them.

I have Blackvue DR900S 2-channel with battery magic ultra setup.

Picked Blackvue as it is a respected brand in regards to dash cams.

App with maps & gps tracking, speed traveling recorded, etc…

The battery backup allows it to record 24/7 (unless I didn’t drive the vehicle for a while).

Notifications to my phone for “impact detected.”

Install was clean (I had the install done professionally).

Wires to rear camera are run through the factory wiring harness door seal thingy.

Thanks!! Did the dealership professionally install it for you? I don't even see the wires in the back. I don't want wires dangling either. Is your system considered hardwired installed?

Car audio shop did the install. All of the wires are out of sight. The battery backup pack is mounted behind the glovebox (area, not sure exactly where)

Wiring to the rear camera is in with the factory wiring.

That is an incredible install, very clean and tucked away! Do you have any other picture of the front setup? Curious how the radar detector is even visible with it on the right side of the rearview mirror.

The most challenging part of my DIY install was finding a source for switched 12 VDC so that the camera shuts off when the vehicle's ignition is off. For me, it was the center console cigarette lighter socket that's accessible from the 2nd row seats. I posted pics in an earlier thread that can be searched.

The radar detector sits above the rear view mirror, I suppose if I was shorter or lowered the seat down the view may be obstructed, but it lines up fine for me as is.

G’day mate, you may have already answered this question here or there but may I ask as to the type of radar system you put in the car and how varied is it.

cheers.

It is a Uniden R7. There are other comparable ones offered from other brands, but I am nothing but impressed with it.

I actually used to be a cop and always laughed at radar detectors, as I always used point and shoot type radar. (Meaning the radar gun wasn’t transmitting unless I was holding the trigger). However, that was a long time ago. In my area (on hwys) the cops seems to always have their radar on, making it easier to detect.

The R7 can easily display radar with plenty of time to check your speed, the range amazes me. Over a mile is not uncommon.

Different areas/countries use different type of radar, for my situation, where cops all seem to use KA band, the Uniden is amazing. My wife borrowed it from me for a road trip, when she got back she asked me to order one for her…now we have 2.

The downside of the R7 is it feels cheap, it is pretty lightweight….but it works, so I don’t care.

Also, Uniden now has auto-gps lockouts, which uses gps to detect and block false alerts.

@84Runner thanks mate.

Currently with regards to Radar Scanners, I am merely researching and window shopping as my need is not great, yet I’d like to have it and not need it rather need it and not have one. Here in Japan I can sensibly speed up when the need or whim calls for it without being stupid about if if you know what I mean.

👍😄

Ya, I know what you mean. I live in the sticks. The saying here goes, “You can watch your dog runaway for days.” In many cases you can see for miles, are the only car in sight, and no trees to mask animals hiding in the ditches…

As another member added Valentine is good, escort has a good one as well.

I would recommend checking out “Vortex Radar” on YouTube. The guy does reviews and tests of all of the popular radar and dashcam systems.

I’ve got the Blackvue DR900X plus 2 channel. Had it two weeks. So far so good. The app works pretty well. Haven’t hardwired it in yet so parking mode doesn’t work. Planning on doing that soon. Will update.
I looked at the thinkware u1000, found the camera was to large and looked kind of weird on the windshield.
