I just got my g580. WOW!!!! However driving home in NY I went up my dirt road with a light layer of snow and WOW!!! No traction with the high performance standard FALKEN tires..... Really scary and unexpected since I didn't realize these were standard on the G wagon. I am looking for winter tires and wheels and need some advise, Looking at tire rack and no real choices here. Any help would be appreciated!!!
This is a "summer" rated tire -- worse than even a M+S rated all season. Congratulate yourself for making it home, and when you next visit your dealer, ask why they let you drive away in January with this tire mounted. Good news is that there are plenty of tire choices in 20" although you might need to up-size just slightly to 275/55R20 (MB specs 50 and marks its tires "MO" hoping you'll buy tires from a MB dealer). IIWY, I'd not drive the truck until you get new tires, something at least M+S rated, but preferably 3MPSF rated, or better yet a snow tire if the G580 will be your DD during the winter. The last two vehicles I purchased -- a G550 and an X7 -- were equipped with inadequate tires, and I changed them before I clocked 1K miles. Don't know who at car companies are spec'ing OE tires, but they're all woefully stupid. Drive one of your other vehicles to a tire shop and get some recommendations for tires that will meet your intended use. Then wait for a day when road conditions aren't winter and have the tire shop install them. Seriously, summer tires in a NY winter will land you in a bump shop with a big repair bill, and then you'll be kicking yourself for not buying good tires.
I'm surprised they didn't at least do all-weather. I was fine for the 3+ years I had my Taycan as a DD with the all-weather tires.
we picked up a G580 for my wife a few months ago in place of her Taycan CT.
Today she was driving in snow… It was like a baby giraffe on ice! I cannot understand why the dealership did not disclose that these tires are summer rather than all season! Especially since we live in the northeast!
Dealers know even less about tires than the nimrods at MB who spec them. My G came with Pirelli P-Zero all seasons with an M+S rating, but I changed them out straight away and mounted Yokohama Geolandar A/Ts with a 3MPSF traction rating that work well for me year-round.
I switched out my G580 Falken summer tires for the Pirelli all seasons that come standard on some G550s and they have been great. I am sure they get less range since they are not EV specific tires like the Falkens but I don't care.
I would think a fully locked rig would drive better than that on summer tires. Are you sure it isn't the driver? Even if the summer tires were bald I'd expect more.
