G63 Performance Package - RACE START

So I have a 2025 G63 with the AMG Performance Package. The truck has been properly run-in, I’m well over the KM it recommends. I’ve gradually increased engine power and stress on components, and have done several full acceleration runs onto to the motorway.
Well today I decided to try a Race Start.

Truck was running great. EVERYTHING was at Temperature, the tires, oil, coolant, trans..etc as I had been driving for a while. Found a nice little strip of pristine asphalt, put it in sports plus with traction on sport.

Starting building revs..the truck cocked up and to the right from the immense torque..released the brakes..truck took off like a shot. BUT a couple milliseconds into the launch I heard a loud bang from the left rear and a sensation like I ran something over. I immediately backed out of the run.

Put the truck back in comfort and tried some aggressive turns and stop/starts, did the same in sports plus just to see if I could notice anything mechanically wrong. Everything seems fine, also no leaks or noticeable damage under the truck. No new noises or anything of the sort on the somewhat long drive home, seems perfect.

Does anyone have any idea what this could have been?

Has anyone with a G63 Performance tried a Race Start? If so what did it feel like? Any torque twist, bangs from the rear?
Thank you and cheers.

Anyone? I know these trucks are relatively new and that not many people might have optioned the performance pack and that launch control on a G is pretty much insane, but some of you must have done a race start?? I’m scared to try again until I hear some others experiences, that it was probably wheel hop, or something else.

Our 25 hasn’t hit the break in mark yet, but we do have the perf pack so at least one race start is in our future.

What I can say is that you likely heard wheel hop and then suspension travel, ABS or diff activity trying to compensate.

Here’s what I base my presumption on: the new suspension makes a world of difference, as you certainly have noticed. Pretty sure I lifted and spun the front left when taking a well angled left turn and rolling gingerly on the throttle the other night. The chassis control is simply unbelievable. And we now have front end control in the twisties! This fridge of a car shouldn’t be this composed.

In fact, the new suspension is so good that I often think the G wants to jump off the ground in normal driving conditions. I can’t shake the feeling that it wants to dig the wheels in and leap forward.

Thanks for the reply and what you said makes sense. But the noise it made was really loud and sharp. BANG! Bloody scared me, thought I scattered the rear end or something. If I go and try it again and something does break or explode, I wonder if it would be covered under warranty??

I am thinking it might be a stuck brake pad, sort of like when you left vehicle with wet brakes till the morning: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...lots-rain.html

You're welcome, reason I think that way is probably because the brakes were sticky or were on the hot side and then you push it hard on to the rotor during the launch so it was sticking a bit, I don't know

Could very well be, I appreciate the feedback. I’m looking for as many opinions as possible. Thanks again!

If you do the launch again does the same problem happen? If it doesn't reproduce, then its probably not a big issue.

OP, was it still negative temperatures when you did the launch? If I recalled correctly, it was below 0c on the day of your post (April 23?) . I thought I remember seeing flurries even.

No it was a nice day, had just put the summer wheels/tires on the day before. All conditions were good, nice pavement, drivetrain and tire temps good, sunny so the road temp was higher than air temp. The sound it produced literally made me think I snapped an axle or scattered a diff, it was loud and nasty! I haven’t done another launch cause I’m too scared now lol. It’s supposed to be 21 / 70 this afternoon so I might go try launching again. I’ll take video inside the truck just incase it does it again.
I can’t believe no one on this forum with a Perf Pack G63 hasn’t done a race start yet, and if I destroy something I bloody hope it will be covered under warranty!

All the best buddy, hopefully just a one off or just that brake pad sticking as mentioned. Think about it, it was so loud just trying to drive after parking at night with minimal force, imagine all that force it put on it when you launch it, it teared the brake pad off the rotor

There is no reason they should deny any warranty, Race Start is an OEM feature, not like you modified the vehicle yourself and outside of factory parameters. If MB corporate really has to, and if it comes down to it, they can pull blackbox data and clearly see the engine and transmission temperatures were good, the conditions were all good/favourable, all conditions were met for Race Start to engage normally.

How do you enable this in the command system? i have the perf package and am still trying to figure out all the little differences. I'm still not sure that exactly the PRO option does above the Sport + mode.

Unfortunately no, hungover, then busy with work, now it’s raining lol. Hopefully soon, tomorrow morning is supposed to be nice and I gotta drive somewhere in the morning. If my stupid brain remembers I’ll try again, launching a G isn’t something that usually crosses my mind

Forecasted rain tomorrow but actually not sure because the weather channel, the weather network, accuweather and WeatherCAN all forecasted it differently I don't know who to believe.
