2025 Roof Rack Mount — Missing Part?
I went to install a Gobi Rack on my 25 G63 today only to find out that a critical part is missing … from the factory, it seems.
Photos tell the story.
My G (the tan G in the attached photo) is missing a metal bracket (as seen on the white G in the attached photos) that spans between the two visible “bolts”. That piece is where the rack’s brackets are supposed to mount.
Any thoughts, ideas or solutions welcome. Gobi told me I’m there first they’ve heard/seen this, which is never encouraging.
Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Additionally, does anyone know the name/type of the bolt I’m dealing with here?
I was able to order the carrier brackets from MB Classic (the classic guys are better with these finicky details), but am concerned I need access to the underside of the roof (topside of the headliner) for install. That would be far from ideal.

Yes, we have the perf pack.

For those of you with non-performance pack G63s … please post a picture of what lies below. The cover plates are just held in with plastic clips. A trim removal tool makes quick work of the process.
Also still hoping that someone here is in the know regarding install. Access to the nuts (which don’t appear to be captive) on the underside of the roof without dropping the headliner would be fantastic.

Interesting why these are omitted on the performance variants. I’m going to have to sleuth around and find out.
Thanks for the part number! I may want to put some cross bars on one day and knowing what I need is great.
Cheers
My research continues. The bolts are called hammerheads. Unless there is a magic trick that I can't readily see, the headliner has to be released. Video demonstrating headliner removal is here:
I am trying to get my dealer to goodwill the install. Imagine the look on my face when I set up the rack for install and popped the caps only to find an empty space. Gobi then told me they have sold hundreds of racks for 2019+ Gs without issue. Until now.

I am taking the truck to our local dealer this week and am on track to get these installed via goodwill from MB USA. We’ll see.
Alternatively, my upholstery guy here in LA will do the job for $1800. Spicy but I’m pot committed with the rack on hand at this point.
Additional photos of what lies beneath the roof caps on your 2025s would be very helpful, gents. It’s a hassle, I know.

Further update on this. Upon reviewing the owner’s manual that came with the car, it seems the carrier brackets for roof racks are presumed to be in place from the factory. No mention of additional work, other than popping the roof cover plates. Photos below.
I am headed to my local dealer this week in hopes of securing an install of the brackets free of charge. Fingers crossed.
I have posted another thread on this exact topic. Seems like it’s Performance Package specific. So if you have the full Performance Package, you will not have this mount.
in NZ, we could spec the suspension as a separate option so that’s what I went with instead of the Performance Package which comes with additional gold wheels, microfibre steering wheel and race start. I am not a fan of the gold wheels and microfibre steering wheels, so I think it’s not worth the extra 4K just to get race start. However, the suspension in my view is a must have so I have spec it as an individual option.

To confirm: when you spec just the suspension, did you get the carrier brackets under the cover plates?
I have a number of theories, but it’s clear that something about the Performance Package prevents a roof rack. Initially, I thought it was the suspension. Now, I’m thinking it’s launch control.
Please confirm when you have a moment. If you have the suspension package and the carrier brackets, I’ll send our G back to the dealer for the bracket install. 7 hours to drop the headliner. Ugh.

However, my understanding is that Performance Package has no roof mount (as what we located), all else equal. Suspension wise I honestly don’t think it will have any impact all the way to the roof, your thoughts?

My initial thought was that MB removed the brackets on Perf Pack trucks to prevent crazy people (like me) from adding weight to the worst place—the roof—and throwing off the suspension sensors.
I am now thinking the brackets were removed to prevent crazy people (again, me) from using launch control with items strapped to the roof.
If your 2025 G63 has the AMG active ride control suspension (which we can’t get as a standalone option in the State) and the carrier brackets up top, that will tell me the engineers weren’t worried about the suspension/sensors.
