Metallic vs non-metallic?

Hi guys,

I found a 2010 G55 arriving in November at a dealer in Boston. The exterior color is not metallic though.

Is there is a major difference between black metallic and non-metallic black?

Any idea if there is a difference about the number of layers of paint between both?

Any pros or cons in general?

Most black G55 here in the USA seem to be non-metallic black.

Thanks

In my opinion, no noticeable difference. It's the same here, they sell G-wagens in five different shades of black and you can't really tell any of them apart (black, metallic black, platinum black, mocha black, and a blueish black).

Go for it, be the first on the block with the latest g-wagen and enjoy all the new goodies it comes with.

That's what I've been told: can't tell the difference apart.

I guess being the first (or among the first) to drive the 2010 will be great.

Thanks for the advice.

If they weren't distinguishable then why would they be offered. I can absolutely tell the difference between black, obsidian and mocha black metallic.

No doubt there are distinguishable. But enough to not get an incoming 2010 G55 on the week of the 15th? Don't know.

How's obsidian different than standard black? Is Obsidian just a standard black but shinier?

Not sure what the 'new' name is for black metallic but it was Obsidian.

On page 66 of the 2010 G-class EU brochure Jimmy provided, it's still called Obsidian.

Yes ...

The Metallic has small shiny flakes in it ... which reflect the light and make dust, and especially spider web scratches, less noticeable

IMO ... the Black looks better when Brand New ... but the Metallic ages much better

Obviously subjective however, at 120K+ and 1 of only 2 options available to us here I find color paramount. Getting one of the 1st. 2010 is insignificant to me. Getting what I want is very significant.

FWIW I have had black and obsidian black and I prefer the regular black. The metallic black always looks a bit dull no matter how clean and the regular black just looks awesome when clean. I don't think there is any difference in thickness or quality of paint.

Thanks for the feedback. I am leaning towards standard black as well.
