buy an AMG and not really know it?

i was talking w/ my boss about a friend of his... (a developer, bookoo bucks) who just bought a mercedes...

"tom bought a new mercedes so his wife could take their kids around... has three letters on the back... AM? something?"
i say, "AMG?"
"yeah! that's it."
"that's the tuned mercedes."
"well, rick told him that that is a hot-rod version."
"you could say that."
"but tom doesn't know anything about it. we were reading about it in a magazine and it goes from0-60 in like 5 seconds..." note that jim doesn't know much about cars either; he is also a mercedes owner.
"but how did he buy it? did he just call them and say give me a car?"
"i don't know. but here's another funny part. we go over to his house and the car's parked outside. rick said you should park it in the garage. tom's reply is that the car got some berries on it and he doesn't want to get the garage dirty... until he takes it to a carwash that weekend..." so he has an amg (not sure which model but i suspect an e55), costing $70k+, and he doesn't want to get his garage dirty. and instead of taking it to a hand wash place, he's going to a local carwash...

um, i told jim that i would be happy to trade cars w/ tom's...

That's funny! I know people like that too! They buy the car because it costs more than the other ones, but they have no idea why. They just know that it cost more! A friend of mine at work that drives a Jag X type (the small engine one...2.5?) wanted to know how much my car cost, so I told him it was 29K (a lie of course). I have since found out that he has bragged to other people about his car being better than mine because it cost more. Now the Jag may be better than the MB (not in my opinion), but certainly not because of the price tag.

This confuses me, Scott. If you've decided to share the price of the car (the true decision for me, not the amount) then why would you underprice it by $11-12K?

You know where most people are going when they ask you the price... they want to compare theirs with yours.

C32 AMG
I don't know about Scott, but I've done that sort of thing before.

I was sort of embarrassed about how much money my Porsche cost. Several times people would ask and I'd underspeak the price. Or they would say "how much does this thing cost, $50K?" (with wide eyes) - "yeah, something like that".

Some people think you're stupid for paying so much for a car

Although that doesn't sound like what happened to Scott.

Well, actually, I didn't want to share the price of the car. I just told him it wasn't as much as he thought (not knowing what he thought), so he guessed around 30K. I just laughed and said 29K, meaning it more as a joke really. I thought for sure he would know that it cost more than that. Anyway, someone later told me about "bragging" part. He went to lunch with this person, and they were talking about his new car. Not sure how it came up, but he told him that the car was better than mine because he paid more (I think he paid 31 or something).
Like jswedberg said, I normally try to down-play the car a bit, although my C class is no Porsche.

It would have been funny if I had a C32 and said the same thing!

That is funny. The salesman could help him out next time, charge him a little extra, so his car is "better" than the others!

I bet most "normal" people have no clue what an "AMG" is. Of course, many people think all Mercedes are $100K cars, so I guess it all balances out!

Just tell another friend (in your friend's earshot) about his English Ford SomethingOrOther four-banger - oh, yeah, X something ...

We're all on the same page... I have the flat badge on my hood which I think down-plays the car a bit, too.

2002 C240 6-spd (ret)
At work, when I first got my C240, I would downplay it, saying "it's the small M-B", etc. Now I'm used to it and I don't care what they think. If someone asks, I just say I have a Mercedes. Of course, most people think it's $50K or more, so what? A lot of their wives drive $40K SUV's and think nothing of it. It's that Mercedes aura! :p

It is really someting how most of people in the world dont have any idea what AMG is or how good it is. But them again when they see an M3 somehow they think its the best thing in the world.

Wow, not a hint of sarcasm there. Would you care to explain why a C230k is a much better buy? Let's do a quick comparison:

Mercedes C230k 6-spd vs. Toyota Solara SE v6 5-spd

1) Engine specs: C230k = 192hp/200tq, Solara = 200hp/214tq
2) Curb weight: C230k = 3305lb, Solara = 3075lb
3) Gas mileage: C230k = 19/29, Solara = 20/27
4) Insurance: C230k = $$$, Solara = definitely cheaper

Tack on a factory-warranted supercharger for $2k more, the Solara would blow the doors off a C230k. So for $28k, I could have a fully loaded 250hp Solara vs a $25k, 192hp C230k. Which would I buy? Anyway, just want to keep everyone's minds open

(PS - a stock Solara SE v6 w/ leather, etc can be had for about $26k)

You are wrong about the insurance. Mine is only a few $ more than it was on a 1978 Datsun. I got discounts for the multiple airbags and the trick brakes.

I wouldn't but the Solara because it is FWD. If I were going to get FWD, it would be a much, much cheaper car.
