Exclamation I am signing off for a LONG time...

I must apologize to this MB community, but I am now signing off for a very long time. For the time being I have no further use of this great and friendly forum community for one and only one reason: No Benzs for me.

Yes it sucks, but what can I say? The parents won't let me get one! Why? Not because of the name or anything like that, one and only one fact, it's rear wheel drive. Therefore, I will probably be stuck with one of the most freakishly boring cars in existence (reliable, but boring, none-the-less); a 1991 Toyota Camry Oh well, what can I say?

Therefore I shall be signing off for an extremely long time, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Exclamation Ok

I'll "stop" on by every now and then and just browse around. It's a shame Mercedes didn't get smart a long time ago and switch to front wheel drive or make more fuel efficient AWD cars (like the Mercedes E320 4matic). The only older Benz that's a 4matic is the 300E, a major gas hog....bummer....

FWD is cheaper to manufacter and weighs a little less, that's why it's around. RWD performs better other than the added weight on the front in the snow for startup. Lose traction with a FWD car and direction control, stopping, and acceleration are all affected. A RWD car is better balanced for cornering as well. Reliability is not a function of which set of wheels drives a car...however...AWD vehicles are less reliable (by definition, more parts that can break).

I live in Ohio, and thus have to deal with sometimes terrible winters, therefore a rear-wheel drive is out of the question for my first car...

edit: please see this thread and if you can, answer some questions on this particular car: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...79#post1212979 it truly is my last chance of owning a Benz (until later).

Rear Wheel Drive beats front wheel drive in cornering and handling, and is probably the best type of car to own if you live in some place like Florida, Tennessee, the West, or even virginia.

However, in states like Ohio, Michigan, N. and S. Dakota, states that have bad winters, front wheel drive or all/4 wheel drive is the best. Rear wheel drive just doesn't do well in the snow...unfortunately.

Ever try to drift a FWD? That's why the police only use the Ford Crown Vic, one of the few RWD cars in the US.

Exclamation yeah

That's a good point, but that still doesn't help the fact that the Mercedes does not handle well in snow (except for the new ones with ESP, which are too new for me).

I had a 98 320 E that was pretty stable on snow. You could floor it and the traction control would'nt let the wheels spin. I had a Porsche on the other hand that wanted to swap ends and was downright dangerous. It depends on the tires, high performance tires just are not very good. If I didn't live in AZ I would have an ML, which are very good when it's slick.

FWD cars do not "handle better" in the snow, they just handle different. In fact, most accidents caused by slippery road conditions have to do with speed and braking. Once you learn how your car handles on slippery surfaces, it is just as safe as any car out there, assuming tires etc. are the same. The only advantage to front wheel drive cars that I have seen is when you are trying to start up on a slippery road. Pulling is more stable than pushing. However, once moving, it's about knowing how your car handles.

I grew up where the winters are long, and the snow is deep. We all drove rear wheel drive cars. Once you learn how to drive them, there's no problem.

Just put a good set of winter tires on the car (be sure to have a summer set of tires for dry weather) and you'll be good to go. I agree with the Rev too, you just need to know how to drive them properly and it'll be fine. You can still just as easily lose control with a FWD car and crash it as with a RWD if you're not driving carefully. Hopefully you'll still be able to get a Mercedes-Benz!

I swap out summer tires for all-season and it handles like a charm. If the roads aren't plowed, I stay home.

The scariest experience I ever had was in a C280 approaching an intersection and losing traction (almost got t-boned as a result), and 48-wheel drive would not have improved that situation.

Yes, I know snow tires will really help, but my parents will still refuse; plus I'm a new driver which makes the situation lean much more in the favor of FWD or AWD.

Yeah, I can't do this though, this would be my first and only car, I can't stay home from college/work/etc just because my car is RWD.

The thing is, that FWD or AWD car is only going to help you get out of a slippery parking space, or get up a slippery hill if you have to stop. It's not going to do a damn thing if you start to slide on a corner, or you need to stop quick. The problem with AWD vehicles today is that they give some drivers too much confidence, and they end up driving at speeds that are unsafe for the road conditions.

Anyway, whatever kind of vehicle you do get, just be cautious in the snow and you'll be fine.

Good luck.

Yes, I definitely will be careful, I'm definitely NOT a speed demon to begin with, and I'll definitely take it easy in the snow.

Sry for the double post.

It looks like I'll be here for a while longer, the 300E 4-matic has caught my attention.

ML is much too new; insurance rates will be extremely high for someone of my age, and the price in general will be high. I also do not like SUVs, and I've not heard good things about the MLs anyway, mainly because they come from Alabama. Oh, and, yes, fuel-efficiency is high on my priority list.

LOL, I can't believe anybody would say rwd is bad for winter, I live up in Canada and we can get a lot of snow, I have a 94 E320 and I never had a problem, and my old 90 volvo 740 gl is rwd too and I could drive through snow banks with it, only thing that would ever be a problem would be bumper clearance.

It doesn't matter what wheel drive your car is, all that matters are the tires. Good tires = no problems. Also, especially in bad conditions rwd is way more predictable, you know exactly where the car is going to go, FWD sucks.

I strongly disagree here with this one; although tires will, indeed, make a difference, it will not compensate for a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Pulling is easier than pushing.
