1980 230ce

Hi, im new here and my grandfather gave me a 1980 230CE. He said something about it being a prototype because it has special factory ground effects and irs. It is an actual european car that was imported. can anyone give me info on this car.The vin is WDB12324310001509 . ill post pics asap.
i ran the vin but what i was looking for was horsepower, production numbers, and origional pics. my grandpa told me it was origionally yellow with black stripes. i was told there was around 850 made but im not sure.
Thanks, Mark

I used to own a 230CE, probably the best car I ever had.
The first production ones were built April 1980, the pilots were built Febuary. Prior to the 230CE was the 230Cs which had the older M115 carb. engines. These were built from 1976 to 1981 over lapping the 230CEs.
Your vin WDB123243-10-001509 relates to a W123 series, coupe, LHD, manual transmision, serial number 001509.
There should have been 4,818 230CEs built in 1980 but I'm not sure how many of these were pre-production pilots.

Specs. (Euro)
M102 4 cylinder 2299cc engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection.
136bhp @5100rpm
148lb/ft torque @ 3500rpm
Max speed = 110mph
0-60 = 12.9 seconds (auto-box)
Standing 1/4 mile = 18.6 seconds

do you have any pics of your 230, he said it was a pre production, i cant find my camera cord, so ill upload mine later. it has the same front grille as the red car in your signiture, i think my car was actually made in 4/1979, its just labeled as a 80 because it was preproduction. ill have to check. i cant find anything about it. he said it was for rally racing because of the urethane bumpers, yellow with black stripes, and had irs.

The only photos I have are traditional developed ones but it was identical to this one, slate blue.

Quite a few firms did SEC/SL style front conversions like this;

Looks to be from a tuning house, possibly AMG. Although it seems strange to use the 2.3 engine. Usually they use the highest model in the range, i.e. 280CE and modify it, engine, brakes wheels, etc.

P.S. is it a 4 or 5 speed, because the 5's are rare even in standard form.

Not sure, judging by the vents in front of the windscreen I'd say late '70s. I think they changed from chrome to black around 1981.
You could post pictures on Benzworld, there's a dedicated 123 section.
