Is the Popemobile based on the G-wagen or ML chassis? I had always thought it was based on the former, but this picture definitely looks more M than G class.

It most likely has a custom powerhouse of an engine, much larger than the 320 and 430, and probably larger than even the 55 due to security purposes, such as getting out of situations quickly if something may arise.
Although, if the thing goes 0-60 in less than 30 seconds, the Pope would probably have a heart attack...

Why doesn't the Catholic church retire him? Come on, give him a break instead of break him to dead. I'm catholic and I really feel sorry for the old man, he should be on a peacefull place and take it easy for the rest of his days (which I don't think there's much more)

There may be some provision where if the Pope is incapacitated mentally, then they might be able to replace him, but I'm not sure of this.
Also, I think in history only one Pope has ever stepped down.
