2001 E320 RWD - Brilliant Silver/Ash: 100,000+
Daimler and Benz made their cars (some of the first in the world) long before BMW was even thought of so I'd say Mercedes does. Ask on a BMW forum and you'll get a different answer.

Yes, Mercedes invented the automobile pre 20th century and BMW has only been around since the 1920s. BMW was near bankruptcy in the 1950s, while Mercedes was recovering nicely.
BMW has nearly zero racing heritage compared to Mercedes.
While BMW sells lots of cars, it doesn't have the capacity to make its own transmissions as does Mercedes, nor, of course, does it make a full line of trucks like Daimler.
BMW, nevertheless makes VERY fine motors, and it really hasn't been until the late 1990s that Mercedes was even close.

I'll probably get flamed for this and I mean no disrespect...but with both companies offering base models like they are, almost anyone who can afford a new car can afford either an MB or BMW; so I would really say neither. I think it takes a company like Aston, Bentley/Rolls, Ferrari, Porsche somewhat, etc to truly exhibit "prestige"

C63 & Mustang Mach1(s)
Maybe take this discussion a step further; M-Division vs. AMG. As an outsider to the German car scene until very recently MB had a mystic in my mind and BMW played second fiddle. BMW made some pretty bad cars in the '80s and early '90s.

the fact that both brands have diluted their lineups pays homage to the idea that a company will sacrifice prestige for a larger market share.
Then again, Daimler-Benz basically makes every type of road vehicle whereas some of the abovementioned companies have limited offerings. I still think the 3 pointed-star does and will have prestige because of its heritage, pedigree, and alot of "fidel cashflow" in the research & development department. Those Germans....

The E-class is the taxicab of Europe (the Crown Victoria if you will) and they're all running with 4-cylinder diesels. Been this way for years.
Daimler is the world's largest manufacturer of trucks.
In the 21st century "leadership" means green and you can count on both Mercedes and BMW going there. This involves ZERO loss of prestige.

Mercedes Benz C280
depends on what exactly you're comparing but mercedes is the classy car as bmw is the sportier more aggressive look car.
To comment on a post that everybody that can afford a new car may as well afford a bmw or a mercedes: What classes are you comparing, Not everybody that can afford a brand new corolla can afford a brand new c class or 3rd series. Not everybody that can buy a new camry can afford an e-class.
After all I don't care what ya'll think, I like the 3-pointed the star leading my way! :P get that on a bimmer
