Tectite Grey -- Road hazard???

So I am talking to a sales rep. at a local MB dealer about a couple of E55s they have on the lot, when I mention that I really want Tectite Grey E55, and another dealer that I know of has one...

The "car salesman" then tells me that Tectite is really not a good color...only special order...because the car blends with the road too much and is much, much more likely to get rear-ended.

Tectite is very unsafe. I just kind of chuckled and let it pass. And this guy wants me to give him $78k for a car...LOL!!! What a crock of it. :p :p

Or white in some areas as it will blend in with the snow.

I laughed at what the dealer said too but in all fairness the National Transportation Saftey Board had an article out a while ago that showed that silver and colors in that family (Gray) are less visible at night and day.

Its hard to say that there are more of these colored cars in accidents because it depends on the amount of silver cars (Gray) sold in the U.S.

The LA Times posted an article earlier this year that Silver is now the #1 color for new cars sold in the U.S. so it should be safe to say more Silver cars will get into accidents too?? I don't know but as long as my Silver E55 is OK then I am happy.

Yeah, he actually did say that no one in Colorado wants white because if they get stuck in the snow, you can't see them from the air...I think the salesman should avoid brown because it may get lost in all the BS he puts out.:p

Except in snow, white is the easiest to spot from the air, which is good if your lost in the middle of the desert in an SUV, but bad if your in Afghanistan and an F15 is hot on your trail.

If grey is such a deadly color because it blends in so much, why do red cars have higher insurance rates? Shouldn't red stand out more, and in turn be more visible to the eye? Wierd.

Oh the wicked webs that our society weaves. Lets see... Red is bad because more red cars get speeding tickets and more speeding tickets means the potential for accidents. Silver is a more dangerous color on the road due to visibility but gets less tickets.

MBTech, I too am lost but out of the past 7 cars that I have had: 93 Prelude (red), 94 TT Supra (red), 95 TT Supra (silver), 98 GS400 (silver), 99 GS400 (white), 2000 GS400 (silver), and 2001 E55 (silver)- I have never once had my insurance rates adjusted because of color.

Damn. I have a blue car, and it blends in with the sky - that must be why birds keep sh*ting on it :-)

Yes red cars do get more speeding tickets but is an insurance company allowed to boost premiums based on your car color?? I have never heard of it.

yes but not much. it may have something to do with the fact that they attract more attention, so they're more likely to get stolen, or more receive more speeding tickets.

ohio state patrol

i grew up in ohio [i know, poor me],on an anniversary of theirs the "official" color became grey or gray because it IS VERY hard to SEE!

true story

a lot of times by the time you realize what it is,they're only 75 yards away.

my opinion about them is they should all be driving camo-hummers,and wearing camos with m16's and kevlar.
they have NO sense of humor and TAKE it personally if you speed there.

The reason why inusrance companies charge more money for red cars is because the colour red is associated with being aggresssive. Example: I buy a red car. I call various insurance companies to get quotes. When I tell them it's red, they assume I am aggressive and flashy(this has been proven in studies). What kind of people are most likely to speed and drive dangerously? People who who are agressive, or people who are laid back? It's not the colour of the car that matters, it's what the colour says about your personality that helps them determine how high of a risk you are.

I know that in the past, MB has released "visibility" data for different colors. When I bought my new 1985 300TD, somewhere in the sales lit at the time was a ranking of the visibility, and implied safety, of differnet colors. That data notwithstanding, I went for the Anthracite Grey. That color still looked great 12 years later when I sold the car.
