So tell me guess what is the BEnz lingo so far as identifieng otehr benzs and like short names for them. For example GM guys know camaros as F-bodys and such. For teh fords guys they just use the engine literage like 50,4.6,or model name like GT,Cobra etc...I've been a member of the boards for a little while but I don't check in much. I joined on behalf of my mom she isn't exactly the most computer literate and everything. So if she has a car problem. I come here to see if I can solve it for her without visiting our new found family member the benz mechanic. BUt anyway she has a 89' 300SEl and is thinking of getting a 420 or 560 soon. she loves mercedes doesn't know why,she just does. Exspecialy the old schoo ones and feels teh new ones are CRAP...lol. But anyway I jus feel a little lost becuase there are short terms and phrases benz related that I don't know about. While I'm at it can anyone tell me about her car...you know typical stuff.

Your wife would be correct in assuming the newer ones are CRAP! Unless it says AMG on it, the post 2k Benz's just aren't worth it. Here, most of us, just use the chassis numbers as lingo like for instance, I drive a C 280 which is a W202 chassis, so it's referred to as a "202". Your Wife's car is a W124, hence "124". Or some people just use the last digits of their model number, for example, mine would be a "280" in my designated forum because it's all W202 C-classes and their are at least five models I can think of for W202 c-classes. Hope I helped you.

Sorry your car is not that great either buddy.
New ones might not be as well built, but engineering is still exellent and its beautiful. Sales speak for themselvs. Then again I expect your bias, coming from an older model.

Blackbob's mom's '89 SEL is a W126.
Blackbob, for the model numbers, just go to the forums homepage, where all the forums are listed, and next to each model is the number.
Hope this helps

By the way, the W124 E-Class is considered among the most reliable modern MB's. It's also been given many awards for value - nowadays, a 10-year-old W124 in decent condition is often worth almost half its original price, which means a lot.
The W124 was also famed for outperforming MB's own S-Class. Not too much smaller than the S, the W124 E was praised for styling as well.
Now, if you can get your hands on a 'Vette-eating AMG Hammer 6.0 or even the Porsche-built 500E, those two are very cool!

Well both are W124's, so they have to be somewhere from 1984 to 1995.
I think the 500E was stopped just prior the end of W124 production in '95 - not sure about the start date (check online).
The AMG Hammer was introduced in '87 I believe - not sure about when they stopped. The thing about the Hammer is that AMG at the time was just a 3rd-party tuner, albeit a famous one, not a part of Mercedes, so they used to also tune used cars that owners would give to them, like any other tuner nowadays would. I'm not sure about how the Hammer was done (new production only or also modified existing W124's) - there's a lot less info on it online.

You know what's funny. I never was a big benz fan till now. Now all of a sudden I can't get them out of my head. WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO TO ME !!!!....lol. So now I only hope my mom gets sick of the one she has and goes after another. That's the only way I'm getting one. Either that I'mma hafta wait a long time till my next. My passed down a 190D at one time but it was to much of a mechanical headache for anything.

Find one of these.....you'll be in heaven
BTW, there are no real good/relaible performance upgrades for your mother's 1989 300SEL (W126). If she desires more performance, the cheapest thing to do is sell it and upgrade to a V8.
