Paying $60-80 k for the average benz plus $400-800 for oil change and minor adjustments is not going to sell cars!

And another comment...this was not free service. You paid for it in the price of the car whether you wanted it or not. I suspect that Mercedes is dropping the service in order to avoid another price increase. The dollar isn't gaining any strength against the Euro.
As a long time lover of BMW's, I wouldn't be too concerned about competition from that quarter. They've pretty much screwed up both the 5 and 7 Series models.
What we're debating here is probably worth $300 or so over the four year period. What is everyone so upset about?

Go to a MB service center and look at the costs for minor and major service.
Or keep on shooting from the hip....blanks
If you pay for what MBUSA is REALLY giving you, it would probably cost $150.
I'm not shooting from the hip. I've been maintaining my German cars from the time I bought my first Porsche in 1957 until now. I've had minor and major inspections performed by both BMW and Mercedes dealerships. For the most part, all you really need is an oil change. My experience with Mercedes dealers is that they know MB owners are relatively naive about cars and so they rip you off.
I have had some great service at BMW dealerships. I have also been treated like an enthusiast. I don't mind paying for 5 hours labor if you actually got 5 hours labor.
All you have to do is watch a Mercedes technician spend five minutes with a flashlight perform what you get billed as an hours inspection.
I'm still waiting to hear what minor adjustments mean.

But that does not have anything to do with the price of rice in the PRC!
The topic at hand is (reminder):
"MB free scheduled maintenance" and it's value.
Why did I by a Benz?
Again, if you can't afford the maintenance, then maybe you shouldn't have purchased the car.
If you paid for the price of maintenance in the car's sticker price, and they decide not to include it anymore, isn't that getting less for more?
Or could it be that this will free up the dealerships that are so busy with regular quality issue warranty items - Oops, thats under the MB Quality thread...
MB even charges me for brakes and rotors. I like how BMW includes brakes and rotors for my car as part of the warranty. We have 4 MB's and 1 BMW. I would not get another MB if the 4years/50K is gone.
Now if anyone thinks they'd rather have a new BMW E60 over the new Mercedes W211 because the price of the BMW includes a few hundred dollars in free maintenance, go to it.
I'd rather have the Mercedes, a realistic service schedule and an extended warranty.
I have heard from a reliable source that Mercedes is also abandoning the entire FSS system and going back to the standard 7500-mile service intervals.
those outstanding German engineers probably were overruled by the new MB marketing/sales/PR team, to offer the FSS.
This team is probably also in charge of outsourcing critical components, in order to lower costs...and more catastrophic failures as a by-product.
How many people get a free set of rotors in 50,000 miles? You might get a free set of front pads, maybe three oil changes, an air filter or two and maybe one or two cabin filters. Guess what, you paid for it!

I have 16K miles on my BMW and have gone through 2 sets of pads and front and rear rotors. My rotors usually last about 10K miles. I often track my BMW so brakes, rotors, tires, etc tend to dissolve very fast.
The last BMW I owned I sold at 60K and the rotors were fine.
