Flagship before AMG?
Hi everyone.
I know one of my local mercedes dealerships is called Flagship Mercedes.
If a used mercedes has the flagship symbol on the back, is it just a symbol the dealer put on it?
Before AMG was around, was it called Flagship?
or can the word flagship be used to refer to any top of the line vehicle?

Thats why i asked the question. I personally believe the flagship symbol is for a dealership. However, friends INSIST that flagship was what mercedes refered to as their "top of the line" models (What AMG is today).

Speaking as an old Navy man, a flagship is the ship which has the commodore or admiral embarked who is in command of a squadron or flotilla of ships. It is considered an honor to be the flagship and the flag officer usually chooses the best ship in the squadron to hoist his flag, all other factors being equal. For this reason, flagship has become a more universal term to denote the leader or the best of a group.

What a great forum! A dumb question about a dealer's sticker leads to a great discussion about flagship models. Any more nominees for the flagship? The winner gets a Commodore's broad pendant to hoist on his antenna mast.

My flagship opinions by timeline...
1960s - 600 Grosser
1970s - 600 Grosser
1980s - 500 (early 80s to the 560SEL, 1991)
1990s - 600SEL/S600
Present day - Maybach. If you don't count the Maybach, then the S600 or S65.
IMO, "Flagship" means "best the company can produce", not the fastest, sportiest or most popular
