When is a good set of tools and multimeter not enough for most repairs on a MB ?

I'm, not afraid to wrench on my own stuff to a point, when is a good set of tools and multimeter not enough for most repairs on a Mercedes ?
mid 90's ? 80's ? gulp 70's ?
Thanks,
Mike

I hate taking my car to shops and watching them charge me for stuff i could have done, guessing it's the engineer in me
So the GLE is for sale as of this afternoon in the Market Place... the wife's E550 is not going anywhere, she'd kill me first lol
Once it sells I'm gonna go old school.. looking at no newer than say 80-90's cars so I can troubleshoot them to fix without electronic tools. maybe a Benz but more likely something domestic.... there is a 68 cougar with A/C local.... looks like a really nice driver... hhhmmmm or maybe that 76 shortbed c10 restomod with modern suspension and A/C.... goto love Sarasota, lots of stuff around...

Engineer in me doesn't understand why engineer in you is hesitant to use a computer? :-) MBs are really fun to diag (and contrary to what people say, luck has little to do with it if you use the right tools and not some universal scanners).

I Didn't work with computers cause I wanted too, it was simply where I thought the money was going to be in the late 70's when i started working. Frankly after over 40 yr's I'm just done using a computer everyday, I want to work with my hands and actually build stuff not troubleshoot stuff with a keyboard
Besides the wife's car is coming of warranty soon so i will still have that weather I want or not

Man wonder if has been spun backwards?
Does look good but craigslist scares me.
Need to see if he has any docs on engine maintenance/service
That color is not on my list but I could see someone liking it.
I would go check out the old forum section on these cars and read what others posted and asked to have an idea what to look for.
