Dealership Trained Drivers

Picked my car up from the dealership yesterday. A customer service guy, maybe early 20’s said he would make sure he pulled the car around. I had been stewing over something for awhile, that kind of reared its ugly head. I wondered if the mechanics(it was there for an air conditioning line leak replacement) knew how to start, run and stop a turbo. So the next thing I see, is my CSR pulling up into the queue, stopped, and killed the engine. I winced. I asked him if he knew how to drive a turbo equipped car. He said he did, so I asked him to please explain. Turns out he didn’t. He didn’t know about turbo spin up, he didn’t know he should disable autostart, he didn’t know about turbo cooldown. So I explained it to him. I asked if he would spread the word to the other CSRs and mechs, but my money is on he didn’t.

Anyway, in you experience, how well trained are the staff at your dealership, in moving the car around the lot, warm up driving, test driving, washing(they bent my license plate) and any other seemingly mundane, but necessary tasks where your car is being operated in their hands? I almost want to tell them I will do all the repositioning etc, but there is always the liability of the non employee moving vehicles around their shop and property.

Still remember back in the days there were turbo timers?

That said, do modern vehicles just keep the fan on automatically if the turbo is still too hot when the engine is shut off?

So some kid started your car in the parking lot, drove it 100 yards to the front of the building and shut it off. You think he should have let the turbo cool down. Sounds to me like its you who needs to educate yourself.

Your fan would normally stay on if the engine is hotter than expected. Also, our cars do have a lower coolant bottle for the turbo but you are right in taking steps to keep the turbo cooler and keeping a longer life.

There really is no need to be rude, or emotional. If you have something to add to the topic of “Your experience at dealerships, with the training level of anyone who can drive your car”, please add your opinion. Save your angry outbursts, and petty comments for another thread, if you wouldn’t mind, please.

I know what you were referring to in your first post, and I’m with you.

If the driver does it when he’s just moving it 100 yards, he may be doing it after driving it around the block or on a test drive. These cars are too expensive to be treated poorly by someone else. Someone else at the dealership that you are supposed to trust.

Thank you. You said what I was thinking, but better. I am not ascribing malice, or intentional malpractice, although that could be happening. I just don’t think(especially the younger ones) are getting the right training, to know what to do, and not to do with a customer’s car. More Ignorance, and not necessarily malice. I don’t see them as valet parking attendants at a ritzy venue somewhere, when no one is looking, they burn rubber in every gear, a get a little drifting in on the way from the venue to the parking lot and back. That is more intentional negligence. And it seems like there is a relatively inexpensive and painless solution.
Anyway, that is my rant, and I don’t need to rant on.

My local dealership hires high school students to be the lot attendant, porter.
