X164 GL-Class Unofficial Picture Thread

That's how it worked for us as well!
Although the black exterior looks spectacular on the GL, I'm not sure about the black interior, which is why I didn't fight harder for the Black/Black GL550 the dealer had on the lot when I bought my Pewter GL. To me, Black on Black is like driving in a coal mine . You also lose out on some of the nice two-tone work that MB does in the interior with their Brown/Tan variants.
The S550 looks awesome with the Cashemere interior color. It's a wonderful contrast to the black exterior, and it's not so bright that it washes out the interior. If the GL came with that color available I would've been all over it.
We walked through acres of lots until we found the S550 with the Cashmere. It was worth it .

The dealer had a pewter when I bought. It is a very nice color...a top choice for me for sure had I not picked black!
As far as your S550...I think one of the nicest color combos on any car is a black ext and light tan/ivory interior. So classy!

The S550 is up to about 20K miles now... loving every bit of it.
I am really taking a liking to the GL - it has presence. I think that is what MB went with when designing this generations versions of cars (X164, W221, the new C Class, the new M Class, etc)
Happy Holidays to you too

New shot...
I took this from the parking garage roof of the local casino. These are two new condos towers across the street which were just recently completed. I removed two light poles from the scene, one between the two buildings and the other along the window line towards the left chrome rail on the GL. The GL is in good company here gang...

Red Rock Canyon continued...
This was taken today (12/1/07) out on Calico Basin Road just before entering Red Rock proper. If you want to see some others checkout the Zenfolio link.

Thanks patsy. On the way to Red Rock Canyon, there is a turn-off about 1 1/2 miles past the marker for RR. It is called Calico Basin Road and you get a great view of the red rocks and surrounding area. I was less than a mile from the turn-off for these pics. I intend to go further toward the mountains one of these day when we have good clouds..there is a picnic and camping area somewhere further down this road.

Jack you color saturation is truly amazing. I believe you once said you are using a D1s with a full frame sensor. I love my Fuji S2 Pro (Nikon lenses) for underwater, especially shooting macro, but I am truly humbled by your edge to edge sharpness, even at internet resolution. I think a trip to the Grand Canyon is in order for your GL 550 and the Canon.

The sharpness is the result of the Canon lenses. This was shot with the EF-S 17-55mm, f/2.8 with Image Stabilization (Canon uses the lens for IS, not the camera body.) This lens, although not a L Series is about as good as they come. I also use a masking technique in PS to sharpen the edges which is really effective.
This particular shot (as well as the one with the GL) was done with 3 exposures (one under, one over and one normal) and then blended in a HDR program to create a high dynamic range which provides detail in both highlight and shadow areas. I am just learning how to use the HDR technique but I like what I see so far.
Here is one more...

GL at RedRock
I can't remember if I posted this or not...I don't see it in the last few pages of the thread. I redid this one and tried to get the GL to "pop" out of the image and I think it worked.

Yes, I use PS and in the case of the image above which is an HDR image, I used a program called FDRTools that creates the tiff image of 3 different exposures. Still working on perfecting it but getting close I think.

i tried Photomatix but just liked FDR better. Seems to blend the images better and has more effective controls for Tone Mapping. FDR does have a demo version good for 60 days I think...try it out. I know what I want to see as a final result but have gotten there yet...a tripod is really needed and all mine are handheld so far.

I had a 20D patsy and it was a very good body. The 30D was an upgrade to the 20D, but not that much was added. The 40D has a new body and the features were improved as well as new features added. I would recommend you go to www.dpreview.com and read entries in the Canon 20,30,40D thread. I am sure there is a lot of comments on whether the 40D is that much better than the 30D. With L lenses and the 30D you certainly have a great camera system and I think upgrading to a 40D would be a matter of whether you need the newer features.
