So, how can a V8 get better mpg than a V6? This doesn't pass the common sense test.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
The German MB site rates the combined mileage of the GL420 at 11.7 L/100km. That's the same as 20 miles per U.S. gallon. But an imperial gallon is 20% larger, so 11.7 L/100km would equate to 24 miles per IMPERIAL gallon. I've also found two U.K. web sites that rate the GL420 at a combined 24 IMPERIAL miles per gallon.
To summarize, when converting the GL320 L/100km specs and the GL420 L/100km specs from the German site, here's what it comes to in U.S. MPG:
GL320: 18.2 -29.4 MPG with combined avg of 23.8 MPG
GL420: 14.7 - 25.6 MPG with a combined avg of 20.0 MPG
I would absolutely believe these numbers because they make sense and they agree with some GL320 real-world measurements that others on this board have observed.
There, I feel better now.

Of course a grille is not much difference but in two years Mercedes does not change its design so easily. And such exaggerations (like that grille) is not the way of MB but who knows...About the 420 CDI I am quite sure it will come to the U.S. sooner or later, and it has to come actually for reason.

Getting 30 or so more HP and a few more stump pulling torque numbers outta the V8?
This V8 could pull anything outta a sticky situation (except George W... dont go there)
