New GL420 at Detroit

Well looks like a bolder looking diesel V-8 GL will be coming to the US! I think the new grill is a big improvement giving it a stronger, tougher look. 515 lb ft of torque should be plenty to back it up, while my wife will be happy with the 24 mpg. Hopefully they can bring it this model year but I'll probably have to wait for a 2008 model.

Well this makes me happy that I resisted the urge to trade in my ML and get a GL450 during my last service visit. That is a beauty.

Looks like I'll be upgrading soon.

Uh oh, it looks the guys that said the GL320 wasn't enough and wished for the V8 GL420 diesel might get their wish. I'm excited! This could mean a ML and S420 Bluetech also. Mercedes must be getting some real interest/feedback on the "320" in the way of sales and request for more power.

This is a Vision Concept car so don't expect it on your dealers shelf too soon. They are already producing the current GL with the 420 diesel for sale in EU. I would suspect this car will be introduced in 2008 sometime when Bluetec is certified for all 50 states. It could also be introduced as a facelift for the entire GL line later in the model cycle.

What's going on with German automakers and their huge front grills?

The grille configuration reminds me a lot of the new Honda CRV...although I think the grille on the 420 is executed better.

V8 diesel has more mpg than V6 diesel?

The story says the GL420 will have a combined 24 mpg. The GL320 has 20/25 city/hwy. So, combined mpg would seem to be something less than 24 mpg on the GL320.

So, how can a V8 get better mpg than a V6? This doesn't pass the common sense test.

Might have something to do with the 320CDI being a common rail diesel and the 420CDI being a bluetec diesel?

I understand the only difference between the CDI and the Bluetec is the downstream exhaust treatments. This should not improve mpg.

Think about it this way , more torque means less pressure on the throttle pedal which means less fuel used.

07 GL450,
I'm thinking they just showed us what the GL63 will look like.

Sorry to be so **** about this, but I think I just figured it out. MB is confusing IMPERIAL gallons with US Gallons.

The German MB site rates the combined mileage of the GL420 at 11.7 L/100km. That's the same as 20 miles per U.S. gallon. But an imperial gallon is 20% larger, so 11.7 L/100km would equate to 24 miles per IMPERIAL gallon. I've also found two U.K. web sites that rate the GL420 at a combined 24 IMPERIAL miles per gallon.

To summarize, when converting the GL320 L/100km specs and the GL420 L/100km specs from the German site, here's what it comes to in U.S. MPG:

GL320: 18.2 -29.4 MPG with combined avg of 23.8 MPG
GL420: 14.7 - 25.6 MPG with a combined avg of 20.0 MPG

I would absolutely believe these numbers because they make sense and they agree with some GL320 real-world measurements that others on this board have observed.

There, I feel better now.

Probably some American in the promotions dept at MBUSA grabbed a GL420 spec sheet from the U.K. and ran with the 24 mpg statistic, not realizing that the U.K. gallon is 20% larger.

Oops!

I don't think this grille will come on a "real" GL. Like NevadaJack mentioned before it is a "Vision" car.

Really the larger grill is not much of a change for a "Vision" car. I'd expect to see it on production GL 420.

Vision cars are just the ones that go into production. It is the "F" concepts that don't. The CLS Vision, SLR Vision, GST Vision and others have gone right to production within a year after being shown. There will likely be a GL420 Bluetec in 2008 and that grille will also. Now whether or not it will be across the whole GL lineup is the question.

If you remember GST Vision had "quite interesting" doors and a full-glas roof Of course a grille is not much difference but in two years Mercedes does not change its design so easily. And such exaggerations (like that grille) is not the way of MB but who knows...

About the 420 CDI I am quite sure it will come to the U.S. sooner or later, and it has to come actually for reason.

Well of course they're going to tone down some concept for production, but "Vision" concept more often than not come to market within 12-18 months after being show.

Did anyone notice BRABUS is already sellling the upgrade kits for the GL420cdi?

Getting 30 or so more HP and a few more stump pulling torque numbers outta the V8?

This V8 could pull anything outta a sticky situation (except George W... dont go there)
