Removing Badges

I have seen some who have opted to change badges on their GL's. What about the idea of removing both badges, the 4Matic and the GL550 (and any dealer badge of course, which I hate when they put it on)? Leaving just the Star on the rear and creating a stealth look. Goofy? Comments?

Patsy, some like the look. The best way to handle removal unless something is screwed down heaven forbid is with a hair dryer. Put it on the high heat setting and warm up the badge and the adhesive holding it down. Use a flat edge knife for removal.

Dental floss between the badge and the body, might be a better idea--- A knife scares me to death

I like the idea, but...

Use a flat edge knife for removal.
I'd avoid the knife, because you dont want a shape edge anywhere near your paint.

On a warm day, or in your heated garage, use either dental floss (first choice because it is thinnest), thin monofilament fishing line, or thin nylon string.

Wrap some around each finger like you are flossing and saw back and forth underneath the letters, one at a time. They will pop right off. I took mine off with kite string, because it was handy in the garage.

You can use Goo Gone, WD40 or a similar solvent to remove any residual glue.

Thanks for the great advice. I know it's personal preference but does anyone have comments on the look of "no badges"?

I would love to see a photo of a "naked" GL. I'm not a big fan of the GL 320 CDI badge taking up so much space - it's a bit obnoxious. When my GL showed up at the dealer - MB had accidentally put GL 550 badging on it! I nearly had them leave it But I'd be living a lie and just couldn't do it! Now I have people asking me what CDI means...I'd rather just take them off but want to see what it would look like...maybe I'll do a bit of photoshop'en...

I agree... its too much. We took the "4Matic" off right away... she's still making up her mind about the "GL450" lettering. If it falls off I'll send you a photo.

Depending on the car, sometimes when i don't see any badges the first thing that comes to mind is that this guy had some bodywork done and the shop forgot to replace the badges...

That...or they're trying to pass it off as a higher model, a GL320 as a 450 or 550

but for the most part...I think it looks too plain with no badging other then the start

I'm on board with the no badge look. If anything, the 4 Matic would be the first to go.

I've seen it at my son's school - someone has what I assume is a 450 with the badges removed (it's definately not a 550 and doesn't sound like a 320). It's cleaner, but the badges (other than a dealer badge - they have no right to put that on there unless they're paying you for advertising) are unobtrusive to me. There's a lot of shiny stainless (chrome?) on the car, and the one I've seen it on is black which I personally think takes the chrome really well.

Oh no you did NOT just say that a 450 is a "higher model" than a 320!

Debadging is far more common in Europe, even with the top-of-the-line models.

I think it looks a lot cleaner. But I don't mind the badge.

1) Certain - Treasure of Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. I believe this is where the term "Bogart" came from also.

2) Guessing - Blazing Saddles

Are you meaning "Blazing Saddles" and "UHF?"

Of course, in "UHF" it was actually, "Badgers? BADGERS? We don't NEED no stinkin' badgers!"
