Was it a local, someone you might be able to get a picture of? I can't picture LED tail lights on the GL. Makes my brain hurt!

Right, but I do believe the sighting was of a GL with LED tail lamps, not just an LED 3rd brake light.

Strange that they used incandescent bulbs for the Left & Right brake lamps on the GL instead of LED brake lamps. Even my 2000 S-class has LED brake lamps for Left, Right, and Center.

LED lamps offer extended life, and expensive looks (for now) but they're terrible in any climate that experiences winter. The incandescent models create enough heat to melt the snow that accumulates on the lamps when driving on snow-covered roads, but the LEDs emit no heat, so tail and brake lamps on these vehicles can be obscured. Very unsafe.

Rarely a problem below the 49th parallel.

Good point.... To solve that I suppose someone will have to integrate "weeping wing" technology into the bumpers to de-ice the LED lamps

Overall, I am quite pleased with out GL's rear light output. Its bright and quite safe, but having LED's in the back would be an added bonus. I love the reverse lights, bright enough to light up the whole driveway when backing up, reminds me of my W210 E320.

Next best thing to LED taillights might be fast-acting brake light bulbs.
