Sorry for another tire question

We are ready to replace 3 of our contis. 1 got replaced for a nail about 3000 miles ago.

Our dealer quoted me $1275 which seems really high considering I see them online for about $255/tire and the Michelin's are $300/tire at Costco.

Does anyone know if the dealer will negotiate their price on tires?

Also, will having the work done not at MB void the tire warranty?

Thanks for any info

Get the tires at the best price you feel comfortable with. Personally, I go to Discount Tire not because they have the very lowest price (though the sometimes do) but the best road hazard program (for not too much dough) that I've used over and over again. I ended up with three of four new tires on fairly worn ones from that program.

But never count on the dealer to negotiate on them! Based on how much dealers charge for tires, I'm surprised they get enough business to even continue offering to replace them.

As for the tire warranty - aren't you voiding it by replacing the tires in the first place? Shouldn't the warranty replace them? Or at least have a procedure for doing so? Since the warranty's sold by a third party through your dealership and not actually by the dealership, I'd say you probably won't void any warranty having work done elsewhere.

IMHO

I believe that you can find much better tyres than the Contis for our GL at Tirerack. I was looking at the Pirellis and Michelins yesterday on their website. Both of these tyres will have far better ride and handling chracteristics I believe than the OEM Contis, which imho leave alot to be desired. I have the Pirellis on our new GLK and even in the 20" size, they have a great compromise between comfort, handling and noise. In a few more miles I will order the Pirellis I think form the 'Rack, and have them installed on our GL.

BTW, you can purchase road hazard warranties from whomever you purchase your tyres from. As for getting them mounted and balanced, just look for a local tyre store that has a Hunter Road Force balancer, and ask for the full 'road force mounting and balancing' when you have the tyres switched out. Remember also that MB does not warranty tyres; only the maker of the tyres does that.

I got new tires on mine about two weeks ago. I brought in the best prices I could find and my dealer matched it. I really don't know why they would not especially if you bought the car and/or get it serviced at the dealer but common sense sometimes doesn't come into play at certain dealers. Getting the tires at my dealer also included getting free road hazard which I would have had to pay for through someone else. In these times I would not be bashful about asking for discounts. The reality is that these dealers have employees that they would rather keep busy making slightly less per hour than not working at all and making nothing per hour.

Per Danno, can I recommend you check out ...

http://www.nittotire.com/#index%2Etire%2Eduragrappler

These appear to be a really terrific tire. Now oddly, if you go by some of the consumer reporting magazines, they put the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs at the top of the All Terrain list, and the General Grabber HTS at the top of the All Weather list (both available in 265/60R18). The Nittos rated noticeably lower in the All Weather list (15th, below Coopers, Goodyears, Pirellis, and even just below the Toyo tires which are made, I believe, of rice paper), but I'm pretty impressed with its design and engineering. Well, that and Danno likes 'em, so they have to be good!

Thumbs up Costco Michelin Install

After 31,000 miles, replaced the 19 inch Contis with Diamaris, exact rating, etc.
After the 75 $ rebate on line, it ran about 275 $ tire installed, with full road warranty, nitrogen fill, and free rotations and air checks as often as you like.
They were professional and did a great job.

I have the Nitto Terra Graplers on my C3500, with 35K. They have been good for wet weather, mud, and one brief ice storm. The tread will make 40K if I can stand the noise that long. They have gotten much louder after 25K. However these are the AT version and are expected to be noisier that the Dura Grapler.

It doesn't appear they make a Dura Grapler for the 19" wheels.

I have the 19" rims on my GL and was getting flats fixed with the Continentals every month or two. I switched to the Dunlop's and haven't had any issues and no flat repairs since I put them on over 20,000 miles ago. They also appear to be wearing better than the Continentals.

Dunlop SP Sport Max. I would buy the tire again. They handle and ride great!

Tirerack.com has them for $174 each.

What kind of flats? I have the same tire and wheel and have only had one leaking tire due to a nail. It never went flat just lost a few lbs. It looks like we will get 32-35K out of them. I don't know how much more I should expect from any tire in this class.

This is what I got as well. Very pleased so far. Also much quieter than the Continental's (even when they were new). Even though I am partial to Michelin, I could not justify the extra $100 a tire.

So what is the mounted price, with road hazard, when you buy from tire rack? Also, who mounts and balances them and honors the road hazard?

You got quoted $1275 for tires installed, and think that is high? When the Contis are (as you state) $255 ($1020, plus tax and installation)....and the Michelins are $1200 before tax and installation?

Do you really want the cheapest option or the best quality of work on your $60k plus (Not sure which G-class you have) SUV?

Mounting and balancing ONLY with purchase of wheels AND tires. Otherwise you are NOT getting them mounted and balanced by TireRack.

Scott, I got mine from my dealer (who matched the Tire Rack pricing). I paid $1,100 out the door. That pricing included the road hazard, getting an alignment (which was $130) as well around $80 in sales tax and disposal fees. I got the alignment because I have always felt that my GL pulls slightly to the right (I know others feel this way as well). It improved it a bit but not much in my opinion.

Tirerack has a list of shops that will mount and balance the tires so prices will vary. Tirerack will even ship one tire or a set to them.

http://www.tirerack.com/installer/index.jsp

I'm not sure about the road hazard.

The kind where the air leaks out of the tire. Ba da bam bam!! I was constantly getting nails stuck in the tires that would cause a slow leak. Since I installed the Dunlops, I have yet to get any nails that penetrated the tires.

Well that does it then. I guess I'll have to get me some of those "nail proof" tires.

I also bought the Michelin Diamaris at Costco...good deal and great service, BUT...I hate the Diamaris. It's the noisiest Michelin I have ever riden on and I have had Michelins on my M-B's for 25 years. It sings pretty loudly on most road surfaces. I wouldn't get the Diamaris if I were you.

It's amazing the variance in responses from different tires on the same cars. My Diamaris Michelins have been fine, with no problem of noise or anything else. In investigating the delivery of tires from an internet site, the shipping, mounting and installation of tires was an added significant cost (about $ 65.00 + a tire). Also, if there is a problem with a tire, can you imagine the complications of dealing with a different installer and seller.

Read the reviews on Tire Rack or Discount Tire's web site. They are all over the place on most tires.
