European Front Bumper Plate for GL

This one goes to the guys located in Europe.

Is there any way that you could order a bumper plate for the Euro size license plate? This is the plate you screw into the bumper and fix the license plate on top of it. The plate is made of black plastic and is shaped to accommodate the shape of the GL front bumper. If you call your local MB they will be able to order you one based on your VIN number. I would cover the cost of the plate plus S&H to the US. Is there anyone who would be willing to help out a fellow GL owner?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi John,

This part comes on any car in Europe. Just like here in the US we have the bumper plate installed on the car to accommodate US size license plate, there is a similar (but differently shaped) bumper plate for European-sized plate. I don't know the part number but if you call any MB dealer in Europe and give them VIN number of the European GL they will be able to look it up for you.

Thank you,
Alex

Question happy to help

I'd be glad to help.
My only concern is that EU number plates are not all the same size.

e.g. UK, BE, IRL, FRA all have different sized number plate and number plate carriers.

I'd be happy to get you a UK one from my local dealer.

Would this do??

Thank you, John. I believe that UK and German license plates have same size. Could you please find out what your local dealer is going to charge for this plate?

Thank you.

Thumbs up Quoted

I'm quoted approx. 14usd for a UK spec front number plate carrier.

Similar to the one in the supplied pic (random sample)

Is this what you are looking for?

Hi John,

If you were quoted for the piece that attaches directly to the front bumper then yes, this is exactly what I am looking for. The license plate (which may also come in its own plastic frame) would then screw on top of this plastic piece. Someone told me that the piece might be officially called as the "license plate adapter/carrier". The picture does show the right piece.

Let's confirm and go ahead with the purchase. Do you have PayPal account? Let's figure out the Total including shipping and handling to the US so I can send you the money.

Thank you,
Alex

ClamShell

The MB licence plate frame (at least as available in the uk)
is a clam-shell design.
Its a plastic carrier that (screws I assume) to the bumper
when the licence plate is placed into the frame, it closes around it to form the frame around the plate.

I believe that we are talking about the right piece. Let's go ahead and get it then.

Thank you,
Alex

John, I will send you a PM with my private e-mail address. We can discuss methods of payment off this forum.

Hi John,

I am so sorry but they sold you a wrong piece. This is the frame for the actual license plate but you would not screw it directly into the bumper. There is another plastic piece that goes between this plate and the bumper and it is specifically shaped to accommodate GL's bumper shape. I have one on my W211 and will take pictures of it for you.

So sorry for all the trouble.

John,

Here is the part number of the plate that I've just taken off my W211. It is A211 885 0181
Your local parts department should be able to identify exactly same part for X164 (GL450). The official name of the part we are looking for is License Plate Moulding and I believe that the part number should be A164 885 0481 or something along these lines. I am going to post pictures to illustrate the part.

Thank you,
Alex

Here are the pictures of what the whole assembly should look like. Notice that it is composed of two plastic pieces:

This is the piece that attaches directly to the bumper:

This is what it looks like when taken off the bumper. This is what we are looking for but for X164 (GL450)
