Looking at picking up an 09 Demo

First of all...thanks in advance to all of you for the info that I have gotten from this forum and especially for the participation that I'm looking forward to as an owner.

Looking at picking up an 09 GL and specifically a 550 that is a demo at an authorized dealer with just under 8k miles.

I know new cars are selling for invoice minus the $10k trunk money from MB.

What are your thoughts on where this should be? Car has not been titled...

Thanks!

Demo...

So we're certain, the car has not been titled - correct? i too am wondering if anyone out there knows how much additional $$$ the dealer gets for putting a car into its demo fleet.

Well almost certain as I spoke to them this afternoon and the GM who has the car is on vacation this weekend (with the car). The salesman did confirm that it hasn't been titled, but won't know until Monday AM.

There is certainly additional money to come out of this one but the queston becomes how much and is it worth it vs a new one without any miles on it.

Hmm...

With extended warranty, I'd shoot for $5-8K under invoice + $10K trunk money (making it about $5K difference with new car). W/o extended warranty, I'd shoot another $3K. Otherwise, it's not worth it IMO.

Being untitled might make a difference on a rate for a new or used car loan. As soon as you sign the papers you have a used car with 8,000 miles. Make sure to get a free extended MB warranty to make up for the miles. At auction similar 550 GLs are going in the $67k range. A reasonable dealer would mark it up to 73 or 74 and expect to get less.

dealer writes it off at 68k, retail is 71-72k.

if there are any new truck incentives, they should apply to this one too.

my take is this is a 62k truck.

dont keep it past warranty.

Thanks for the feedback guys...this is very helpful in preparation for my discussion with them on Monday.

If this car isn't titled, then I can't get it CPO'd and receive the additional warranty.

Have you guys bought an extended from MB? I tend to stray from these kinda warranties but curious on value...especially for this machine.

I picked up an '07 "LPGA program car" myself with a little over 700 miles on it. All it came with was the original factory warranty, but with only 700 miles it wasn't as big a deal. What I do know I should've done was get the extended on it because this one, being a very early production model, was a bit of an abberation when it came to stuff going wrong. They might give something for those 8000 miles but I'd guess it'd be money off rather than extending a longer warranty. Or maybe do one for the other. You know, drop the price but add the warranty at its price back in, something like that?

Anyway, good luck, and remember - PICTURES!

the warranty doesn't start ticking until the car is sold

if it's not been titled, then yes when you sign the papers you will have a used car with 8,000 miles, but you'll still have 4/50,000 left in warranty

That's not correct. The warranty has usually been punched in even for untitled demo cars. Otherwise, if something goes wrong at time of "demo" and the warranty has not been punched in, MBUSA will not allow any warranty repair to the car.

So buying demo car = buying used car with the exception of being able to be the "first owner" on the paper (which IMO doesn't mean anything).

Last but not least, demo cars can have extended warranty (not sure whether this would fall into "CPO" or not - who cares). I came across several demo cars that had extended warranty when I was looking for a GL.

Warranty start date depends completely on the state of ownership. If the car has never been titled, then if you buy the car with 8k on it, you get until 58k of warranty, IF that is what your state law says (maybe 50/50 split as to whether it works this way).

trunk money will still apply to a new vehicle that has been in demo service.

Thanks again for all the feedback here.

Went and made a deal on the car and then got a call from a competing dealer who had a new one in stock with slightly higher sticker.

Made a deal on the new one for the same price as the demo...a killer deal that I couldn't say no to.

I'll post in a separate thread.
