GL450 with Captain's chairs????? Advice needed!

Hi all, I've had many Mercedes over the years and earlier this year bought both a 2006 CLS500 for myself and a 2007 GL450 for my wife. Come to find out we are now having twins!!! I have a 5 year old and with the twins and taking other kids to school, we really need to have captain's chairs. It is looking like I will have to sell the GL450, but don't really want to because we LOVE it. Is that even an option for the GL450's or is there a way to convert to this?

May be a stupid question and reaching a bit, but wanted to see if there was a way to keep this great SUV. Thanks in advance

Jlindy

sorry, please explain the logic. If you are needing more capacity, then why have captains chair? In most cars that decreases the 2nd row to 2 instead of 3 people.

The logic is simple. There will be a couple of 5 year olds getting in and out of the car all the time and if we don't have captain's chairs, then they are having to climb over seats all the time or go in through the gate which isn't appealing either. Two car seats won't fit in the second row and still be able to allow entry to the third row. The other thing I didn't think of is that the third row in the GL only seats two instead of some SUV's have three. It is looking like we are going to have to sell.

GL 320cdi, Chevrolet Avalanchero, GLE 350 (on order)
When planning the GL line, there were supposed to be an AMG, (GL 63 was trademarked with all the other types in N.A. and Europe in 2006, and one had been seen testing) and they were pretty far along with a Maybach version as well.

Since there were many early diagrams showing captain's chairs (including the balance/fade screen of your Comand head unit), it had been mooted that the captain's chairs would have been offered in one or both of those un-produced variants...

I hate the phrase "captains chair."

Reminds me of 1970s Chevy vans.

yes, you can retrofit to searate captains chair type seats and yes it would involve using seats from the R class.. I dont know pricing offhand but its probably going to be expensive unless the chairs came from the boneyard...

Thanks for all your advice. I ended up trading it in for an Infiniti Qx56. I really like it, but I liked the drive of the GL450 more.

Repurposing 2020 GLS Captain Chairs

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but dying to get a 2013 GL 450. Only problem is that my wife is adamant that we get an SUV with captains chairs. Know there was a discussion before about using R class for captains chairs, but has anyone had experience using salvage captain chairs from 2020 GLS? or have pics of what this looks like using the R class chairs?

holy zombie thread ... but to answer, seats from the x166 and x164 are not interchangeable.

i hear your wife loud and clear here, second row cap chairs make life way easier with kids.i just swapped caps chairs into our beater ‘Burb and life is easier with no “she hit me first” bs going on since they are now geographically separated; with each their own insula to call home and protect at all costs.

the Rs you want are the ‘06-07 R500s and are approaching advanced age. Don’t touch the 06-07 R350. I don’t believe the seats will swap over as the R second row seats are mounted further back and slide on rails, whereas the X164 GLs are mounted on a cradle.
the second row in the R is also elongated - look at the size of the rear doors and you’ll see it. I don’t think they’ll fit in a GL.

get a 15+ Yukon XL Denali, it’s almost as good as a GL and you’ll never have the discussion about needing a larger car ever again. It also has captainchairs.

Google is your friend on this. Search terms "Mercedes R-Class interior"

Thanks so much for the great response. Just to make sure I understand correctly, the x166 covered the 2013+, the x164 was for the 2007-2012's. Would the captains chairs in the 2020's fit in the 2013 GL 450? (which is a x166 right?)

If not, it sounds like at least the configuration of the '07-'07 R500's would fit the 2013 GL 450, but the concern is that the the seats may be too big?

Apologies for the clarification request, new to mercedes. Re 15+ yukon, but crazy as it sounds, at least in my area, those cars are way more expensive that '13 GL 450's!

2020 is X167. Not sure if it would fit or not.

Keep in mind that 2nd row seats in X164 contain airbags. You’ll run into problems adapting anything else to this system.
