PROJECT BLACKOUT 2009 GL 550

Well a few months ago this is what it looked like new

https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...gl550-amg.html

Today my paint/body guy brought it by for me to see how it is coming along.

Have another set of headlights that will be seperated and painted, new exhaust with thermal coated tips painted black and not sure about the side rails. Left the hood emblem alone its just too nice to mess with.

Added some 22" wheels with Vredestein tires (tires are awesome btw)

So what do you guys think (cell phone pics not the best)

Looks like your shop is doing a nice job. However, it is not my preference. I am in the process of adding chrome bumper plate, skid plates and fog lights with chrome bezels as many others have done on the boards.
The blackout look kinda reminds me of old cop cars that had painted rims and no hubcaps. I grew up in the late 60's early 70's and the neighbor took his car to the paint shop every year for the $75.00 paint job and they painted everything except headlights, tail lights and windows. Just saying...
Just one man's opinion....

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

what size tires are you running, and what's the width and offset of your rims?

THAT'S what I was waiting for! Looks slick as hell. Definately a Sopranos-mobile! Of course, you'll be playing some thumping bass every time you drive, right?

I agree with your chrome preference - heck, I even put the little chrome fins on the hood. I think the chrome looks extra-good against the black paint. That said, I love looking at variations that people do with these guys. It makes me feel more like we're dealing with European cars, where people really make them personal and each one's individual. I think it looks great, though - like you - I wouldn't personally do it. And I really don't think it looks like the old "used cruiser" look. That'd require the house-paint quality job they used to do on those things. I remember my wife's old Prelude (we called it "the quaalude"). She got it re-painted, as cheaply as she could. It was nice to have the muffler match, I guess ...

Platinum Guy,
I am interested in your Forgatio Wheels. Did they chage your ride much? I've head 24" is a bad idea on GL. What's your take and why are you selling? Any pics or model would be greatly appreciated.

I'm definitely a guy who likes to personalize, and that word is the key. You do these changes for yourself and because you like it. When you throw something out there in the forums, some will like it and some will not. Those that don't usually will not post (thankfully), "Hey your car/truck looks like crap." In your case I'm not digging the all-black look and really hate the use of the word "murdered" as people refer to them. I'm glad you didn't use it at least. Just to show you I'm not some "grump old man", I'll enclose a picture of my Charger I just added the black rims and tint to. Feel free (anyone) to flame is as is necessary ...

There are so many of these around town and most of the owners are much older than me (36) I just had to seperate myself and YES I do like to be different. I welcome all comments and opinions because I understand that when you post threads such as these they are open to good comments and criticism and I take it in stride. As far as wheel size/brand/offset I will have to ask as my painter found them for me, said they would fit and I said go for it but I can get the details from him. I'm keeping all stock parts never know when I will need them or sell/trade this one in so I can swap parts back out if needed.

Now the SL had some fun this past weekend was in Baylor's homecoming parade and had a few beauties along for the ride.

Okay, this is so but tell me about the Lambo doors on the SL. I hired a limo out here where they'd done Lambo doors in front and suicide doors in the back. When I got in I noticed the suicides in back were back to standard and asked about them and the driver said something about how they didn't fit right or work right or something, but the front was still Lambo doors. Well, the inside lighting kept screwing up and he said one of the doors in front wasn't closing properly and that they were always giving him trouble. Do yours work well?

STP

We're only a few years apart and I appreciate wanting to be different b/c I'm the same way. The stuff I do to my cars is b/c I like it and hopefully others do too, but that's not so important. I like the wheels on your SL...

The doors were done by the previous owner which is a good friend of mine he did go through alot of work to get them done and ended up taking it back to MB to have all the wiring redone as the shop who installed the doors just could not figure out how to keep the wires from getting wet and it was throwing some sort of code on the dash as well. I rarely drive it or use the doors they do go out before going up so I can use them as regular does if wanted. The doors are heavy, way to heavy to ever be used as lambo style doors but hey he is like me wanted to be different. I too love the wheels on the SL but have had to replace the rear wheels several times due to potholes there is maybe an 1" or so between the tire and rim so the streets are not kind to them. I did put one of those Sprintboosters on it and WOW what a difference in throttle response. I ran my buddy in his 06 GTO that day after the parade just for fun he didn't catch and pass me til about 130 well past the 1/4 mile mark so I chalked it up to a win

Looks amazing - did you actually buy the taillights or did you just smoke them / have them smoked? My tint guy says they make a paint to tint corners that works better than film.

My painter did all the tail tinting he's pretty good at that the clear coat on the tails is better than on the car

love the tinted taillights

love it. i did it a lil bit different. its a light smoke. but i taped off the chrome in the taillights so there's contrast. its subtle during the day. and the chrome really pops at night.
