Oil Warning Message

So I occassionaly get an error message while driving. It typically occurs towards the end of long drives and asks me to check the oil level at my next refeuling. Its been about a week now that I get this message on and off, and every time I check the oil level, it appears to me to be okay, but on the low side. So my question is, should I just buy some oil and top it off, or should just go get a complete oil change?

I think it depends on when was and how many miles from the last oil change. I would find out first why it gets low though.

Top it off - MBs can eat oil, especially engines with relatively few miles on them

Same thing happens to me, I've been reluctant to top it off since the message only comes up once or twice then goes away. I'm afraid of overfilling by topping off and blowing gaskets.

Have the oil level sensor checked also. Our was replaced when it was fairly new and the messages went away.

At one time, a defective oil level sensor (or bracket, or something) was a common dealer replace item ON THE CDI engines. I had not heard of the problem on the 450 gasser. The symptoms on my 320 CDI were the same though - a false oil level warning message. Removing the oil pan and replacing the sensor and bracket fixed the issue.

Mercedes Benz and AMG recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic. See your manual for a chart re: the correct weight.
