Loud engagement clunk

I get a loud clunk when i put the car in gear, or press the button to put the car into park. Is this normal? None of the other MB's i have owned have been noisy when going into gear.

Other than this inital noise when engaging either D, R or P, the shifts seem smooth and quiet. (not as smooth as my old ML320 though.)

I did try resetting the transmission, but this did not seem to have any effect on the inital gear engagement sounds.

Any suggestions? I will ask the dealer to check it at my next service in 4K, but am fully expecting them to tell me this is normal, so was hoping to get some opinions before that time.

Thanks

On Mercedes with the new column shifter, the gears are selected via an electric solenoid, which does make some noise. More of a whirr than a clunk, I'd think. Lots of ground clearance on GLs, so the noise is less muffled than on say an S-class.

This is quite a loud clunk. I am surprised how quiet the interior of the GL is and it is very audible in the car. The sound appears to be coming from the bottom of the engine towards the firewall. I'm guessing this is where the transmission is connected to the motor.

I'll also try checking the U-Joints for play if i can get to them easily! :-)

When I park the car in an incline and then I shift the gear from "P" into "D" or "R" I can hear a "thud" sound. I have also experienced this from the minivan I used to drive though I think it is not as loud. Any other GL drivers experience this?

I use to get that noise...it was because i wasn't using the e-brake. So what I started doing is before putting it in park i keep my foot on the brake, put it in park while foot is still on the brake and then push the e-brake in. Also do the same when putting it in drive..put your foot on the brake release the e-brake put in Drive while foot is still on brake. I hope this helps.

It's called a "Transmission park pin". Most all automatic transmissions have it, be it MB, or FIAT When you park on an incline, that pin holds the vehicle in place when in Park.

We do something similar in both of our cars when parking on an incline - except we put it in "N" and then engage the e-brake and release the brake pedal, once the e-brake is bearing the load, we put it in "P".

I've experienced this clunk when parking on an incline in both my GL and my wife's Odyssey minivan.
