ipod connection won't charge

Hello, I've just recently purchased the GL450 and the dealer said i can connect my itouch to the connection in the glove box and everything will be fine. I did that as soon as I got home, the music plays fine, but it won't charge nor would it allow me to change songs, does anyone have the same problem with their itouch?

I don't have the iPod connection in my GL but the car I got for my kids (2008 Scion) has an iPod connection and I bought a cable for it. My iPod Touch does not charge on that one either (and gives notice to such when I plug it in). It might be that the Touch needs some different type of connection or has to be charging from an actual USB port, maybe? JMTC.

You need one of these to enable charging: http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/1667 I picked one up at Target for ~$30.

To use the ipod controls while it is plugged in, you need to jailbreak the ipod and install an application called "no accessory splash" from Rock or Cydia. (the app is not Apple approved and is not available via the app store).
It is a must have app for use with the MB ipod adaptor IMO. It is borderline unusable otherwise.

Cool find! As for Jailbreaking, I personally don't recommend it. It's for very advanced users and those willing to brick their iPod/iPhone, without the possibility of warranty repair/replacement.

I have the iTouch with with the iPod integration kit in my '09 GL450. It does not show that it is charging on the screen of the iPod but it does indeed charge it. Once it is plugged in, you have to control it using the buttons on your command system, you will not be able to change songs on the iPod itself once it is plugged in. HTH.

p.s. my iTouch is not jail broken and I did not download any additional apps to make it work.

Steve - As much as Apple would like you to believe otherwise, jailbreaking is very safe and easy if you're using the "standard" ways of doing it. Your device may become unresponsive if something goes wrong along the way, but it is very likely (certain?) that it can be recovered. It probably isn't for somebody with zero tech knowledge, but you don't need to be a tech whiz to do it successfully. Depending on the OS version you have, it is as easy as downloading a program to your computer (Blackra1n for 3.1.2 or below, Spirit for 3.1.3)and executing it while the phone is connected to itunes or navigating to a website (www.jailbreakme.com for 4.0 or 4.0.1) with your phone. www.redmondpie.com has some good guides on the process.

Momsbenz - jailbreaking and the no accessory program allows you to continue to use the normal controls on the device even after it is plugged into the ipod cable in the vehicle rather than having to use the limited controls available via the steering wheel and display on the instrument panel (on 07 and 08 vehicles), that are very basic to say the least.

my 08 GL550 does not charge my ITouch.... nor does it do a very good job of allowing you to search out songs and no playlists at all.. I was actuallyexpecting to see the whole thing in the NAV system... oh well.

I just saw that Scosche adapter in Target today.

It says it will allow charging. But I dont know for sure.

I do know that my 07 gl450 will play and control my 3rd gen ipod touch pretty nicely. Although it is jailbroken, I didn't need any other software to make it work. So I'm not sure why you would need anything like that.

On my 2010 GL with the manufacturer's iPod connector in the glove box, the device does not charge but with the updated COMAND interface, it makes changing tracks and playlists much easier. I do agree the previous generation interface worked pretty poorly, had an '08 E63 that came with the older COMAND and the iPod controls sucked.

Search Cydia for "NoAccessorySplash" (one word).

Might want to check with your dealer, there was an accessory update a couple weeks back about not being able to charge certain ipods with the cable. They have an inline connector that plugs between the ipod and the connector and allows charging.

I had the same problem that iPhone 3G wouldn't charge when I got my 2010 GL350. I complained to the dealer and they ordered me an updated iPod cable (Part# b6-782-4578) free of charge.

ysgi - the app gets rid of the "accessory connected" screen that appears on the ipod/iphone when you plug it into the car so you can control it via the controls on the device rather than the limited controls available via the vehicle.
