GL for the wife for xmas need help

I wan't to supprise the wife with a gl for xmas. I am leaning towards an 2007/08 550 or the diesel. I cannot decide which one. I am a performance freak/diesel fanatic, so I will want to add alittle pep to it also. Which on is an eaiser mod? And what is the best bang for the buck without warranty issues? Thanks

On a more serious note: I have had the 2008 550 and traded it for a 2011 350 not long ago. Both are great. I loved the 550 for the performance, love the 350 for the better fuel economy. The big reason I bought the 550 at the time, was the optics of it, with the large wheels, fender flares, etc. But I got that now on the 350 as well. My wife ended up getting the 550, and it was just too much power for her, and she mostly drives around the city, so there is really no need for a big engine. As for me: I have my fun in the E63 now, and enjoy the 350 Bluetec on longer highway trips with the family.

So either way I can't go wrong. I do love the fuel economy on the diesel. What kind of fuel ecconomy were you getting on your 550?

To repeat a pearl of wisdom, there's no replacement for displacement.

I have the 550, and the most significant benefits in my mind are:

1. Power (but this is super high on my own priority list)
2. Exclusivity (every other soccer mom has a 320 / 350)
3. Included vs. available features
4. Design (you can never replicate a 550 with a 350 or a 450 unless you replace the hood, bumper, grille, etc.)
5. etc.

That being said, I think you need to weigh your / your wife's preferences pretty carefully.

Good luck

My Navigator also gets 11 around town so my 550 is my economy car and the Navigator gets to play on the farms.

GLK350, GL320CDI
we have 2008 GL 320 CDI 92000 kms and 0 problems.

Great car tow 7500 pounds pulling boat behind it 950 kms at once no issue what so ever and great mileage.
Without towing at 120 km per hour getting 9.1 litres per 100kms.
Did more than 1100 kms on one tank.

Great resale value much higher than 450 or 550.

Plus you can have distronic with 550 NO.

Get as many options as possible you will enjoy them all.

Amazing car the best 7 seater we ever had.

Regarding #4: My 2011 GL350 looks exactly like my 2008 GL550 did, except for the large grill. I would say the 350 now looks even better, but that is because there were updates to the appearance, such as new mirrors, different style 21" wheels, LED's front and rear, etc. - that is compared to my old GL550

The OP is deciding between 07 / 08 options. And yes, the whole GL line was updated with the LEDs, powerbumps, etc. All the GLs now look better, but I'd still take my 550 over any other GL of the same / earlier model years.

In the US, we can't get the 550 fender flares and wheels on the 350, unfortunately. It comes in a Sport Package in Canada, right?

You Canadians, eh?

From the factory you can't. A couple of our guys have done them aftermarket, though.

Canadjins. Lovely people. Excellent bacon. Great comedic actors. Funny accent. (At least in Alberta, eh?)

Okay, first, and this one's tough, but Canadians ... are Americans. They live on the continent of North America. We are (according to my step-sister from Toronto) UnitedStatesaliens. (Her word, not mine.)

Second, 2.4 US Gallons per 62.14 miles is (drumroll please!) 25.89(ish) miles to the gallon. 'Cause that's how we roll in CONUS!

The whole conversion thing was a joke. I make it my business to pester Canadians every chance I get. In fact, if we want to get technical, I think Canadians are more deserving of the title of "American" than we (collective we) are because they choose to honor their native nations in important instances like the Olympics, etc.

Fine. Everything I say is in absolute seriousness. I never make jokes. I don't say things simply so I can type the word "Unitedstatesaliens."

And Molsen is better than Budweiser, which I say even though I was born in Buffalo (so I should pester Canadjins more than you. Nyaa.)
