GL350 deal. Am I wrong ?
Hello All.
I'm following this forum for a long time already and respect your opinion, so I'd like to ask you guys if I did something wrong or didn’t.
I found GL350, Demo model with 7500 miles , MSRP is $74K. I offered them $62K for that car and they looked at me kind of strange ( their best number was $66K) - like I'm from another planet and don't know the value of that car at all. Have I done something wrong ? Have I offered them strange low number ?
My math was like that - invoice price for that car is about $67K minus 7500 miles - about 80 cents per mile = $6K , so total is $61, so I thought $62 will be a fair offer. Please educate me, because I feel myself like a total idiot.
Thanks to all.
AEG.
P.S.Please don't be afraid to call me silly.

I ran into the same thing when I purchased mine back in 09. I asked them what they wanted for a demo with about the same number of miles as the one you are looking at and it was rediculous what they wanted. I ended up just buying new from another dealership out of state that sold me a new one for less than what the first dealership wanted for the demo. It doesn't hurt to ask. Keep feeling the dealerships out until you find one that wants your business.
When I got out of college my first job was in sales. One thing that I can tell you about sales people is that the customer that they respect the most is the one that knows how to negotiate. If you are irritating them you are doing something right. As long as you are polite, don't worry about the strange looks or responses to your offers.

Keep searching is the best advice.
You will eventually find at least one dealer that will be willing to sell a car at a less than criminal price.

If they really want to sell (and make a commission) they will talk. If they think they can find some other [sucker] who will give them more they'll hang on and try. A demo is a USED CAR, it may be in good to excellent condition, but it is a USED car. Dealers NEVER like to admit that fact. It may have a 'new car' warranty but it is a USED CAR [with a shorter warranty].

Fourdiesel said it right - the car is used. I've actually bought my last two cars as demo vehicles (5-7K miles) and you can get a good deal. Is it a 2011 or 2010? My experience is be patient. If they have your contact numbers, they'll call you if you are close. It helps to be at end of month, quarter, year.

I bought mine in January 2011. After searching for a couple of months and getting quoted list, I found a demo with that was only a month old and had 1200KM.
As such, I managed to get nearly 30 grand off list (bearing in mind that here in Australia the car costs well over a hundred g's).

Thank you all for replies.
The car was 2011 ...and btw warranty starts not from the day you buy it, but from the first service day, which was in September 2010.
I think I'll keep searching. I'm looking for 10% off MSRP and dont think it's a big problem to find.

if you wait another two weeks so gas is over $4 that truck will be at msrp...
in the last two months i am observing the diesel gl's to command very high prices... depreciation on those is noexistent. some trucks have actually gone up in asked price.

On the other hand - I don't think $4 gas will drive the price of GL350 higher. Don't forget - when price of gas is $4 - price of diesel is $4.20-$4.30 ( at least in NYC area ) . Today in NJ price of diesel is about 3.80-3.90 area...so people may just stop buying those kind of cars for awhile - like we saw in 2008. Prices went dramatically down at that time. Future will tell.
I actually found the guy, who is giving me 10% off MSRP on any GL 350, but I thought may be the DEMO model will have more discount. I think I was wrong.

Buying these used cars require patience. I paid $52K for my 09 GL320 Blutec with 23K miles and CPO with an extra year warranty or up to 100K miles this past January. That truck sat on the lot since November of last year and was traded in in October.
You need to look at Autotrader and follow cars that have been sitting on lots for a deal. Otherwise, the savings are not there. I am planning to buy a house in Greenwich, CT this season and will be applying the same rules.

No offense, but I'd rather buy brand new for $64K instead of almost 3 years old car for $52K. I don't see any savings in that transaction. The only good thing is 100K mile warranty.

If it has all the options you want, is in nearly new condition, $66K might be a fair price. You need to strongly consider the resale of these vehicles. List on my truck was $68K - it still sells in the $40's 3 1/2 years later. Also consider how many miles you drive a year - maybe the 7,500 isn't a big deal? Ask the dealer to see it's service records since it was put in service as well. Point is, you will not find a new one selling that cheap. These don't sit on the lot long...

While in theory that math may be accurate, I scored a similar deal in Jan on a 2009 320 Bluetec, with EVERY option avail, for $52k @ 14k miles, with 2 full years left on manf warranty. I visited almost every dealer in SoCal, and wasn't within $30-35k of what I paid for a new 2011 similarly equipped. At $2.50 cost per mile difference (after sales tax), it was a no brainer.

Not gonna get the 100k warranty on a new car unless you pay for it. If you buy CPO and haggle like a ****, you get it for free. It's the same car with 10-20k more mileage but more warranty!

I agree GL has very high resale value and this is why I consider GL to buy instead of to lease. It's actually cheaper to buy brand new GL instead of used. You're not saving any money on used GL.
