2008 Mercedes GL 450 - Suspension Issues

Hey all!

I am new to the MB world and have really enjoyed learning from all the various posts on the site. I came out after church on Sunday and noticed that the suspension was completely dropped on all four corners of the GL. I started the car and waiting for it to rise, but nothing happened. I have ordered a new relay, since no one had one in stock in town. It will be in tomorrow and I will try that to see if that might be the culprit. More than likely though, the culprit is probably be the air compressor. I just wanted to check the cheaper things first, before I went out and threw some more money at it. We have been getting the malfunction (GL with arrow going up) for about a week and a half. Anything else that I might could check to eliminate before buying a compressor? Thanks in advance!

Thanks BlownV8! I am going to try to replace the relay in the morning and see if that does it. If that doesn't, then I will order the compressor and get it in this Saturday. I will update when I get it all working again!

Just a quick update... The wrong relay was ordered from Napa, so I have to go back and order the correct one. I got to looking at Napa.com and didn't realize how extensive of an online selection they had. I was impressed to say the least! I found the correct relay and noticed that they had the Arnott Suspension Compressor for right at $400. I thought that was a pretty good deal and wanted to pass it along to anyone else that might need one. They also
Had the other suspension pieces as well for a better deal than I had found anywhere else online.

not sure if this is correct, but it seems i read somewhere that if you do not buy the parts directly from arnott they do not have the lifetime warranty

might be something to check on

looking forward to hearing what fixes the suspension issue on your truck

The relay is usually included with the compressor. $400 is not bad for buying locally. Of course, you can find it cheaper online.

Thanks guys! I forgot to mention that I am going out of town this weekend (Sunday) and need the compressor in before I head out. That's why I am buying from Napa. It will be here overnight and I wont have to wait a week to get it! I will make sure and ask them if a relay comes with the compressor. I might just get an extra relay anyway to keep around if I need it. Thanks!

It's definitely a DIY project. Shouldn't take more than an hour to change.

Another update... Went to order the part from Napa and they do not have it in stock. They told me to call in on Monday, so it looks like I will not be taking the GL on this trip... Great! I still got the relay and will put it in when I get home. Maybe that will work..! HA! Any other ideas on where to order from that I could get it relatively quickly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One more update... When I put the relay I got from Napa in the fuse panel, the GL wouldn't start. Nothing... Any ideas? Wrong relay? I should have asked this first I suppose, but isn't the suspension compressor relay the 3rd one from the left on the fuse box under the hood? Maybe I have the wrong relay! Thanks!

I should have added last night that I put the old relay in and it started right back up. Just curious if anyone has ever had this same situation happen to them?

It sounds to me like it's the wrong relay, and it is shorting out the low-voltage system for the computer.

Can anyone tell me the location of the relay for the compressor? I will see if I can get a picture.

Check this link out... This is the same relay that I changed and the car wouldn't start. Very same situation that this guy had. I will check the fuse in the morning to see if its bad. I have ordered the compressor and it should be in sometime early next week.

Bump and an update...... I went out today to start the GL, just to make sure the battery stays charged. It cranked right up and ran for about 15 seconds and then died. I didn't see any codes or warnings, it just shut off. Very strange I thought, so I tried it one more time and it did the same thing. It isn't acting unusual or anything, it just shuts off. Could a bad relay and a compressor be the culprit?? Thanks in advance!

For what it's worth, the parts you are looking at are not all that expensive, so throwing parts at the problem isn't such a bad course of action.

Update... I replaced the suspension air compressor today and am still having the issue with it running for about 5-10 seconds and then dying. No codes come up, just the remove key once the car has stopped running. Also, as the car shuts off, I can the hear the air compressor coming on and then it dies as well. Any ideas???

One more update... I swapped the relays for the starter and the suspension compressor and the truck cranked right up and ran, and didn't shut off!!! Awesome, right? Well, I noticed that the compressor still wasn't running, so I thought I would swap the fuses forthe Airmatic pump and the electric pump (fuses 107 and 108). Cranked up the truck and it ran and didn't shut off again, but the compressor still wasn't running still. I am BAFFLED at this point!!! So, I unplugged one connection on the compressor and cranked it without plugging it back in. I got the Airmatic malfunction right away. The car was also running fine at this point. I turned the car back and plugged in the compressor again and cranked the car. It went back to what it was doing before... ran for five seconds and then cut off. UGH! Any ideas? I still need to replace the original relay. I got to looking at the one I got from Napa today and the layout on the side did not match, so I am thinking that the relays are not the same. Could a relay be causing all of this trouble? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Absolutely. If the air pump doesn't get a start signal from the CPU until the vehicle is running I imagine that command coincides with the shutdown of the engine. The wrong relay is dumping electricity into the wrong wires either shorting out the system or giving the CPU a headache. So has the compressor worked at all in any configuration?

I do still have the original relay in the truck, not the relay from Napa. I am thinking that the original relay is bad causing the air compressor to not start running until the engine shuts off.
