New GL350 Owner. Need to make warranty decision in 24 hours
So I work in the car industry (Nissan Commercial), I have access to a non MB but very reputable firm extended warranty. 3 year 36k from right now for $2500.
The vehicle, 2011 GL350 49k, just bought.
About me, I do work on everything I own, I have torn apart top ends, do all maintenance, etc etc. I really don't like anyone other than myself working on my vehicles (If you want it done right, do it yourself person) However I only own older vehicles because new cars and their complexity have always worried me. I love benz and I have several 80's S class sedans and they are GREAT, none with less than 150k.
However this vehicle scares me with it's complexity, are there any DIY guys out there? For a competent person is it simply too complex to diagnose and repair any potential issues?
Just wondering what I'm getting myself into if I decline.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't mind some maintenance, but I don't want in depth projects unless they are voluntary..ha
AUL is the warranty company btw. Very very good firm

The diesel is very expensive to maintain compared to the gas version . If you were getting a 450 or 550, I would have said don't waste your money. Most of the problems with the gasser would occur past that mileage band with the exception of the airstruts. I believe I was on the second set of airstruts by 100k miles. The factory ones are horrible.

I'm assuming your vehicle is not a CPO, so it's not eligible for the CPO extension.
If it is, I added the additional 2 years of coverage for $2500 I believe, typically $3500.
4 years unlimited mile warranty on mine. I'm not complaining.

I am like you - I like to do all of my own work. But on this truck, for the first time in my life, I bought the extended warranty. 7/100,000. And it's already more than paid for itself, just in the first year...
I also have a 2011 gl350
Oil cooler seals
Both outside mirrors - blind spot sensor failed
Security sensor for the ignition keys
Several engine sensors
It's an expensive truck to own without a warranty....

Years ago I saw the trend for a much higher maintenance costs of the diesel vs the gasser GL. When I voiced my concerns on this forum, I got flamed. Though I don't wish problems on anyone, it is good that the diesel owners are voicing their concerns about the maintenance and repair costs. It will protect future owners that just look at the mpg difference and think it will be cheaper to operate.

Ridiculous you got flamed. Our extended warranty is 10k miles from running out and our service advisor at MB suggested we go get a quote from Carmax even though we've had so many major replacements on our 2011 GL 350. The service advisor's concern is the electronics. I think our days of paying for the car in full and holding on to the car an extended period of time is over. Disappointed.

I got rid of my 2008 6 mos after my extended warranty ran out. It leaked all over my garage floor. Another 1000.00 oil leak. This one I paid for. My engine mounts were also leaking. Did not fix. Ordered new car and turned GL into dealer early before new GLC has arrived. Run to Carmaxx or Autonations.
