Advice on 2010 GL450 4Matic 46k miles

Hi everyone - new member here. MB wasn't really on the radar until we came across a 2010 GL450 4Matic w/ 46k miles. I've reached out to see if it has the ELW, but I think I read somewhere that it's only for 6 years so may be a moot point anyway. I'd appreciate your comments on pros/cons of purchasing the vehicle, things to loo out for, suggestions, etc.
Happy holidays!

Pros: I find the GL450 to be an OUTSTANDING family cruiser. The air springs provide a ride thats unmatched by other 3 row SUVs and its extremely quiet inside. In fact, its quieter and has a better ride than my parent's 2018 XC90. The V-8 makes lots of power and makes it really easy to jump out in traffic or get up to speed on the interstate. It's rated to tow 7500lbs which is as much as some 1/2-ton pickups. The seats are comfortable regardless of whether you are a driver or 3rd row passenger. The MBTEX is pretty awesome. Looks and feels close to leather and it very durable. Most probably feel the fuel mileage is a con, but to me the ability to get over 20 mpg on the highway while seating 7 and V8 power is impressive. I cross shopped the MDX, Highlander, Pilot, and QX60 and to me it was no contest.

Cons: generally lower than average reliability. Parts are about twice as expensive as the vehicles I listed above. Repairs and maintenance can get quite expensive unless you DIY. Insurance and fuel cost will be higher than those above as well. I found the technology to be below average for 2010 vehicles.

Very common problem areas are power steering rack leaks, a/c compressor going out, leaking air bags.

Yes unless you are a DIYselfer , the car will cost you a bunch in maintenance. Alternatively if you know a good shop that accepts parts that yo buy, that is another way to save money. Parts at the dealer are 3x more expensive, almost the same with the independent shops. However many non dealer shops will accept your parts, which you will buy in Ebay, othe MB sites, etc,, and can save that way. Yes, they say we can't warranty the parts, etc, I know., you basically take a chance on that, they still warranty the work and whoever sells you the parts usually has warranty on them, and is how you do it.

Thanks for the comments so far. I’m not sure on package specifics. I found another one, a 2012 with more miles. Thoughts on both of these please?

My GL450 is a phenomenal vehicle. The first 100k miles were less reliable than the 2nd 100k miles. Common issues with the exception of the turbine speed sensor in the transmission are relatively cheap to repair. With close to 250k miles, I would still drive mine cross country without worry. The exterior looks great and the MB Tex interior is holding up extremely well.

The 2012 is priced on the high side for its year/mileage, while the 2010 is on the lower side for its year/mileage. The age difference is insignificant since they have relatively low and similar mileage. I think the only appreciable difference between 2010's and 2012's was being able to get blind side warning. I do see they have some minor packaging differences (wood steering wheel vs standard steering wheel, leather seats vs mbtex seats, rear entertainment vs not). Without seeing them in person and driving them, I think the 2010 is absolutely the much better buy.

P.S. I was fortunate enough to go Hawaii a few times several years ago. Incredible place to visit! Miss getting those malasadas for breakfast, haha

just quickly looking at your two options it seems you have a choice.

The 2012 has the elusive rear climate control and vents. Possibly the hid lighting package which I’m a firm believer in, wooden steering wheel and black mbtex (nice!) and the important tow hitch!

the 2010 has none of these options, has the double halogen fog lights instea of led drl and for sure has halogen projector headlights.
but it has rear seat dvd!

my recommendation is go for the 2012 and try to negotiate at least 3-4K off just because of the options if it has the lighting package.
Retrofitting a hitch will be expensive for the 2010 but doable as is installing hid bulbs

it really depends how strict your budget is and what you can negotiate.
You will have to replace all 4 suspension air bags and compressor at some point though.

I got the carfax on the 2010- what's nice is that MB Honolulu has been reporting the service activity. However, I notice that they seem to report performing some of the mileage interval services early. Also, as @kombifan warned, the air compressor has already been replaced.

So overall judgement seems to be leaning towards to 2012 and trying to negotiate off the asking price.

Thanks for all of your input - much appreciated. Happy holidays!
