X164/W164 REAR SAM WIRING
Hi,
I have a GL 550 2008.
After some water made some trouble with my rear SAM - some weeks ago the SAM totally burned out.
Now - we reconstructed all the wires and connectors - there is ONE cable left.
It's a bit separated on the plug "J" - this is the upper right one.
I hope someone can tell me - to which PIN this cable goes.
I know it's something between 37 to 39.
THANKS SOOOOO MUCH !!!!
Alexander

Is the wiring different from car to car?
Is there a scheme of all pins for this plug?

Yes-MY to MY and that is why all the weekend rodneys go BS when you ask for the VIN----they haven't got the FF idea of the importance
Yes,its in the three page wiring diagram which I will post after 1400 tomorrow.
Look carefully for connector J pins!!!!!

PIN not to find
This diagram is not the correct one.
I got another one - which is showing J 38/39 at the correct place.
Or is it some other version?

Sorry, I don't understand your question.
My car has the 0.75 BlueWhite cable connected to the left side of the J connector.
So, there are two diagrams I found now - which are showing this cable. Older version before 08/2008 - PIN 39 and after PIN38.
This I can confirm after looking to my burned SAM. I have an XRAY pictures which showed me the metal parts in the burned plastic - I was just not sure if it was PIN 37,38 or 39.
Sorry, but I have no idea what you talking about with "dwg" and "97MAC".

Here is the confusion, you have drawing(dwg) 97MAA which is page 1 of three page document for the rear SAM for your VIN. I posted drawing(dwg) 97MAC which is the third page.
To answer your specific question the dotted line reference on all dwgs means there was a change and that it only applies to vehicles made on and after after the dates on the drawing change or specific models or types(gas vs diesel) bla bla bla
You know when you vehicle was made, therefore you know if the change applies to your VIN.
Just another reason why there is so much BS on forums----people don't know!!!

Thanks a lot!
I too found now 3 different diagrams. I can not really see, where the difference is in the name…. the diagram itself is different.
One of my connectors - is half on the one diagram - the other half on the next….
On my plug C - there is a yellow cable at PIN 12 - wich explained nowhere… ;-)
It makes me totally crazy.
I mean - I rebuilt all connectors… I made all cables … as you can see on my picture - my SAM was totally burned down...
I got a complete indoor cable harness from a 450 - but a 450 is not a 550... Some guy from MB already told me - I will have fun doing it - because no car is like the other...
But I toked the old SAM carefully out … made an XRAY picture of the cables which still placed in the melted plastic and then I replaced cable by cable. I also was able to measure each cable - to which connector at the board it was going…
The only missing cable was the grey/blue one - I started this post with.
It was cut of and at this connector the board was completely destroyed and the correct location of the PIN was not to find.
It seems you are a absolutely PRO with this stuff.
For me - it's the first time a work on a car.
...and I guess you realized - normally I speak German. Unfortunately - I do not live in Germany anymore - I moved to some other country in Europe - and we have absolutely NO car service here… ;-)
Maybe you can help me with the other drawings, which are necessary for me and post it or send it to me.
Can you also find out which specific SAM I need - in connection to my VIN?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Wow better you than me------------------The original rear SAM part number was 164 540 01 01 and the current replacement part number is 164 540 22 01.(None others will work or can be flashed to work with your car)
FYI: Your car was shipped in 09 2007.

FINAL question
Okay...so I got the correct SAM.
A last question.
The plug A is destroyed and I need a new one.
It's the connection to the the trailer harness.
Do you know, if this plug available with out the complete harness and what the name / number of this plug ?

The connectors, plugs and pins are available individually, however you need EPC or a dealer to define the parts. My EPC is down therefore find a dealer the parts are cheap.

I found a solution for this. I got a trailer harness for nothing and so I got my missing plug.
But I have to ask you about another problem.
My battery is totally dead and I guess the seat control is made by the rear SAM (?) -
Do you know any way to remove/ move the passenger seat?
I can not reach the screws … the seat is at a very bad position.
What can I do?

same thing happened to me
HELLO ALEXANDER:
I saw your post and was wondering how you fixed the car.
The exact same thing happened to me I have a 2008 ML320 CDI and I love the car but the rear sam burned out completely and now the car sits not doing anyhting.
I would love to repair it and wanted to see if you could give me some good advice on your experience.
I tried finding a complete REAR SAM HARNESS without success.
How do you think I should proceed.
I saw you just fixed the wires, how did you do it ?
Many thanks in advance.
if you can help me finding the harness I am ready to buy it as well.
Thanks.

Hi guys, I have a issue, I suppose with rear SAM module,
A month ago, I received a message that the right licence plate light has failed. Well the first thing I have done was to replace the bulb, but for my surprise it was ok. So I got the multimeter to verify if there was 12V at lamp terminal sockets, but I had only 3.4V in the right terminal while the left socket is receiving 12.2 V.
Today I used Star diagnosis to see if I could find the problem, and it pointed some points, one of then that could be the lamp, a short, a broken wire or a disconnected plug. I started verifying the voltage at the right lamp socket, and now there was any voltage coming while the left socket had 12.5V.
I think that can be a disconnected plug as in the last mont I had the roof ceiling fixed in a car shop, as it had to be taken off.
Looking at the rear SAM module I found that the connector is the one that conducts energy to the licence plate lamps, rear door air compressor and the button that closes the rear door is the connector F.
Well, I would like if someone here has any idea of the wire color that send positive voltage to the right licence plate lamp and also where the harness passes into the car. By this way, I think I can test it with the power probe, and f necessary, I can disassemble the rear panels.
Thank you for all in advance.

did you ever figure this out? I am asking because I have a weired issue where my lisence plate lights are not working, but flash when I open or close the trunk with the button. Your message suggests that they all come from the same connector, and that I perhaps should start looking into wires coming from that connector F?

Aloha from Hawaii,
I am having the same problem with a FIRE burned rear SAM from water damage on my 2011 R350, my wetsuit leaked down the rear compartment onto the electrical components (Mercedes should fix this design problem!)
I have tracked down the correct replacement SAM I think, ZB 164 440 46 01 for VIN 4JGCB6FEXBA116439, but have not been able to get a wiring harness yet.
Any suggestions on where I can get a wiring harness one from a used parts dealer?
Otherwise, how hard will it be to reconstruct the wires and connectors like you did ademeo??
Where is the best source to get the wiring diagram and manual for my 2011 R350?
Mahalo in advance,
MBZHI
