Great site! Happy to be here !

Hi, I need some advice I have a 2007 GL 450 and my right side passenger fuel pump went out and I ordered a new one, but the dealer told me that I needed to replace the driver side fuel pump sending unit as well, is this something I should do or what if I don’t? Thanks

I guess technically it’s not a pump but a transfer sending unit ?

I'm curious about the "need" to replace the driver's side, as well. Or, was it "recommended"? Also, are you referring to the pump or the sending unit? A sending unit "sends" the fuel level info to the computer/gauge.

If it's like my BMW, the driver's side pump is a "transfer" pump... it transfers fuel to the passenger side which contains the "real" fuel pump and the sending unit. Can anybody confirm if this is the same in the GL? I haven't messed with the GL's fuel pumps yet, to say from experience. But, I don't understand the need to replace more than you have to - other than for the theory of "while you're in there". On my BMW, it's a pretty easy job, though, so I wouldn't do it for that reason.

Recommendation

RecommendationIt was just recommended if I change the fuel pump I should also replace the other side, is it’s only function is to send information to the fuel gauge? Because when I removed it it had a high-pressure line going towards the motor

The "real" fuel pump would have a hi-pressure line going to the engine. The "sending unit" is a different thing - that one would NOT have a fuel line - just electrical wires that would (eventually) tell the dash gauge what to display. That would also have some type of level sensor, as well.

If the tank setup is like I am thinking (a "saddle" tank with two sides to it), then there would also be a "transfer" pump to move fuel from one side to the other, where the fuel pump is.

What does the service manual say about replacement interval for the fuel pump/sender/filter for the 2007? I am curious about the recommended interval and whether you are approaching that (or have passed it). Perhaps the dealer was taking that under consideration? Most times I would take "replacement in pairs" with a grain or two of salt, but sometimes it makes sense to do it. Not saying replacing both in your case makes sense.

IIRC, for the 2010's fuel filter/pump it was something like 240000 KM (or 150000 miles?). I don't have the service book in front of me, though, I am going by memory.
