2012 GL550 Power Steering Fluid

I know the 450 of that era takes Pentosin chf 11s, but my 550 user manual says dexron 3 atf (which I'm pretty sure is transmission fluid) so before I buy the wrong thing I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but this page you sent me is overly complicated. I just want to know what the OEM steering fluid is for the 2012 GL550 x164. I'm fairly sure it's Pentosin CHF 11S, but I want to be 100%. That page probably has it listed as compatible, but that doesn't mean it's what's in my truck.

Whatever the brand, it needs to meet the mb specification number. What its called is irrelevant. Check your manual for the specification number which I think for your car is MB236.3. Any fluid that matches that right specification will work.

Regular ATF is a good deal thicker than the pentosin fluid.

The power steering pump is much simpler than an automatic transmission, and is also not burdened (I believe!) with wear items like clutches, so it would not surprise me that the power steering system is not picky about the fluid.

It's looking like it does take transmission fluid for the power steering. I was just surprised to see that transmission fluid would also be used in the power steering system. Learn something new every day, I guess. I would have thought it would use the same fluid as the GL450.

Is this the correct stuff? Don't see the 236.3 designation on the bottle.

I hate not knowing what the people who owned the truck before me might have put in there, if anything at all. I really want to do my best to take care of this thing, unlike my gl450 which I trashed using it for work lol. Don't want to mix fluids.

Every MB approved fluid no matter what, has the MB spec number or its not the right fluid. Thats why I sent you the link to the MB fluids site. If you don't want to trash your car as you've said then buy power steering fluid that matches the spec number. If you don't know whats gone in it before then putting the wrong fluid in it now isn't going to help. I can't see why you'd be doing anything but buying fluid that is labelled as meeting the MB spec number. You can get this at any auto store. Guessing at something on amazon because its got a Mercedes logo? It could be for any MB from any era. Might as well.put tomato juice in it.

Its just a simple hydraulic system, you can pretty much use cooking oil in it.
