2013 GL 450
Not sure where to go

Hi everyone, I am stuck in a bit of a rut and don't know if anyone can offer any help or guidance. I have a 2013 GL450 that had its engine replaced in 2021 by a Mercedes Dealership, with a remanufactured engine that had around 70K miles. The body of the vehicle had around 110K miles. Around 6 months ago I was having issues with the Cylinder 5 misfiring. I replaced the coil pack and spark plug and the issue went away. About a month or so ago I was downstate and the vehicle starting misfiring again badly to were I had it sent to the Mercedes Dealership nearby downstate and then up north towed. The dealership stated that because the warranty goes to 120,000 miles and the vehicle has 120,430 miles, it is not covered. If I would have of gotten notice sooner of this extended warranty letter I would have of taken it in sooner. I received it one day before it was at the dealership. I am not sure where to go with this the dealer said their hands are tied because it is up to corporate and corporate I can not get into contact with someone in power to look over it.

Did you have the coil pack and spark plug replaced a month before hand at the Mercedes-Benz dealership?

You said the engine was replaced "around 70,000 miles." Find the exact mileage, maybe you can squeak in that 50k miles.

As mentioned above, did Mercedes replace the coil and plugs?

For our knowledge, why was the engine replaced? Just wondered since everyone is always bashing the diesel.

feel free to bash the diesel, but this was a M273 gas motor.

oh, excuse me I also just reread the post… This is an X166 and this is a known problem.

I think you’re SOL on the warranty, but why does it need a new engine? What is the diagnosis? Do you have a second opinion?
Have you had somebody prove to you that the inside of the misfiring cylinder is irreparably damaged?

never mind. You have an X166 GL, this is the sub forum for the x164 which was made until 2012. What you’re describing is a known problem for that year GL and is likely the reason why your engine was replaced in the first place, and now the error has occurred again on your replacement engine. Pieces of the cylinder wall coating are missing likely.

@admin, can you please help OP go to the x166 forum.

This place is a joke.
Mercedes isn't going to extend a warranty they've already extended. It has to stop at some point, and that point is 10yrs 120k miles from the original warranty start date, which is what they consider the useful life of the vehicle. Nothing lasts forever, and if it did Mercedes would be out of business. Time for you to buy another car, the repairs will exceed it's value.
The only recourse you have is IF the problem was misdiagnosed by a MB dealership while the extended warranty was still in effect.

Did MB just bolt a couple of turbos on the M272 motor? No kidding the cylinder walls will come apart.

Man, I hate turbos when it comes to reliability and longevity. Turbos are fine for situations when you drive it hard and rebuild it often. They work for longevity only if you over-build the xo@# out of them. Volvo levels of indestructibility. Not that long ago, motors used to be 100k mile items. They built them better, and I am now hoping for 250-300k out of my M273, if I go easy on it and take good care of it. Similar for 2000's Toyota and Honda motors. Now with them bolting turbos on everything, we're back to sub-100k mi motors. Especially considering people think "turbo" means "punch it, early and often!"

I don’t know much about the M278 other than the first years had serious issues with the cylinder wall coating’s longevity. 50-80k service life expectancy.

First year m272/273 had existential valve timing gear issues…see a trend here?

don’t get first year MB anything.

Yanno the root cause for these m278 motors lasting. 50-80k?

Yes, I’ll call myself out on that one.

I am aware of the problem OP is facing in this thread, and it’s an M278 specific problem. The basic architecture of this motor builds on the 273 to include the Alumasil? Cylinder liners. There aren’t any problems noted in 273 engines with cylinder walls flaking off, so reasonable man theory states that the addition of boost has provoked that problem.

Don't you and I both have 07 GL's?

Although I think technically they started in 06. Maybe it's more like first six months.

Why didn't MB just donate motors to endurance racers and let them beat the snot out?

Yes, the 273 has the siliconized aluminum cylinder walls, as does the 278. However, it is not Alusil, which has the whole block made from a silicon-aluminum mix, but rather silicon-aluminum liners (Silitec) on an aluminum block. I don't know what the functional differences are. Perhaps silitec is cheaper, or perhaps the liners are easier to prepare better - in the aluminum-silicon mix, the aluminum is etched away, leaving a roughened surface that is all silicon, like sandpaper but very fine and holding oil.

ha ha yes we do… But I diligently searched for an engine number that was outside the affected range.
