Running board lights staying on issues

Hello all. I've got a strange issue that I can't seem to find an answer for. I've searched here, I've googled and have found nothing. Maybe I just don't know how to word it correctly, IDK. '11 GL350. The side running board lights stay on while driving and take up to 15 minutes to turn off after turning the car off and locking the doors. I do not have any open door messages on the dash, the interior lights come on when the doors are opened and go off when they are closed, there is no indication that there may be a door open to cause this. I had the rear SAM replaced due to water damage of the old one. Also replaced the rear hatch latch as that was giving me problems and a message that the rear hatch was always open. Figured that could have been causing it but since that is now fixed and the problem persists, I'm at a loss. Could this be a programming issue with the SAM? HELP!!

I was thinking about water in the sensitive areas when I was at your first sentence but as I read more, you mentioned SAM has been changed already, yes its definitely SAM related but without a proper scan, my guess is as good as yours, car needs to be scanned first.
Good luck, hope you find it quick.

Wouldn’t I have a door ajar indicator if that was the case? Or is there a separate one just for the lights?

Not always.
One of the battery drain culprits is usually a switch failed or failing, in that it doesn’t let the car fully go to sleep because it signals that a door is still open.
Some lights stay on and all of the bus architecture and ECM’s also stay on. Your symptom is sort of similar but different.

I have to go look in wis to see if the red warning stating door open is driven by the latch not closed and not the light switch.

I don’t have a battery drain issue. The lights only stay on while I’m driving. When I park it and lock it, they go out after a minute or less.

OK, so probably not a door switch.

Have you had the car for long?
Did you have the same replaced or did it come to you with the new Sam?

Reason I’m asking is I think someone might have programmed the car in DAS developer mode to have these lights stay on for longer as under body lights?

I inherited the car from my father. When I got it, it had lots of electrical issues. I took to a local Mercedes guy and he replaced the SAM after he found water intrusion. Also replaced the front fuse box under the hood. I replaced the rear hatch latch as that finally gave out. But these lights have been doing this since I got it. All of the other electrical issues have been addressed at this point. My morning commute is around 25-30 minutes and the lights stay on the whole time. I drive in the dark so I notice them. When I get to work and leave the car, the lights sometimes turn off after a few seconds, sometimes they take up to 10 minutes. It's very strange.

Classic water damage and electrical corrosion symptom then. I hope you get this one but be prepared to be chasing gremlins with this car forever, especially if the water leaks still persist.
