100 mile round trip...

Did a 100 mile round trip yesterday..... got 19mpg......that beats my previous 2011 model by 2! Have an 800 coming up next week.... will be interested in that one.... the 2011 never did better than 19 on that one.

More thoughts..... the Distronic PLus was great! I intentionally put the vehicle into situations where the Distronic would have to get involved and it did so very nicely! Active parking assist......well, it does do a nice job of parallel parking, but I'm still nervous about letting it do it!!! Regrets? I think I should have sprung for the Active Curve function!

I've always wanted a car with Radar Cruise Control so I'm excited to finally have one soon. I'm glad you approve of well how it works.

Why do you feel you should have sprung for Active Curve? I test drove two GL 450's without it and they handled nicely around turns, very little sway. Of course those who do have Active Curve will likely disagree. I didn't order the Designo interior either but would have sprung for that before spending $3,150 for Active Curve. Just my 2-cents.

I'm also nervous to let Parktronic do it's thing. I actually love using the 360 camera when parking. I can probably parallel park quicker using the camera then using Parktronic, but I'll give it a try soon.

Distronic is great on the highway. Just set it to a speed your comfortable with, and all you need to do is change lanes as needed. I haven't used it too much yet though as I don't want to lock in one speed for long until I'm over 1000 miles. Hopefully I'll be past that mark when I take a long trip in April.

My regrets so far include not getting the Pano sunroof and getting the off road package. I tow a boat and drive in snow country a lot, but I think the 450 is capable enough for these tasks without the package. Live and learn.

Interested in the comment on the offroad package. I had regretted not getting that package (i.e. would have liked to have had it) - so wanted to understand a little more about your thoughts. Are you on the 19 inch conti tires?

I am on the standard conti 19's. I'm not sure how much a better tire would effect the off road/snow handling, but I'll stick with them for now.

I did use the snow setting the other day when we got a foot of wet heavy stuff and the roads weren't plowed that well. I tried to go back and forth between snow and auto setting to notice any difference. I did feel like the snow setting added a little extra grip, but it wasn't like I was going to slide off the road if I didn't use it.

In another month I'll be towing the boat so I'll use both the tow setting and auto to evaluate the difference. My boat + trailer weigh about 3500 lbs, so it shouldn't tax the engine or transmission at all.

That's a badge of courage. I did the same thing, had it set at 55mph and took the exit ramp to a stop light. Never touched the brake from 55mph down to 0mph. But my foot was less than a nanometer from the brake pedal.

I assume there was a car stopped in front of you at the light. If the radar could detect red lights, I'd pay extra for that!

Yeah, sorry my bad, was following another car. Stopping for red lights and we'd almost be able to remove the driver.

In response to all.... I think its wise to know what the vehicle can and does do in various situations, thats why i take it out and try it! With regard to the off road pack...... I get into some pretty nasty snow/mud situations on the final 3 miles of a trek to our vacation home in the hills of Vermont. There are times when the ability to lock the center diff and and raise the height for clearance are a must.... thats why I had the off road on my previous two GL's and now on this one.......in fact, the previous two had the ability to lock the rear diff as well.

the 2014 S-class will probably have something that can do this!

Speaking about the Parking Assist: My Parktronic sensors seem to work just perfectly, however, getting the GL to actually point out a place to parallel park seems to be both random and rare. Maybe I have a problem. I plan to see if the dealership has a way to check the system to see if it actually is working as designed. I do have the parking package and I have only gotten the GL to park itself once. I get very little notice via the arrow next to the big blue P symbol to actually press the OK button. Generally, when it rarely shows itself and I stop, it is usually off prior to me pressing the OK button. Anybody else find the same?

I find it exactly the same...... In retrospect, I should have used the money for the active curve system which probably would have been a "silent" helper .... just doesn't have that "gee whiz!" appeal! That being said.... i got the 360 camera with the park system and THAT is worth every penny! Fantastic!

Interesting observations. One of the reasons I didn't get the Parking assist is I think I will parallel park my GL no more than a dozen times in the 5-6 years I plan to own it. But the 360 camera does sound interesting and useful.

I think the 360 camera is a must especially if you're upgrading from a smaller car or truck. It makes it virtually impossible to ding a fender or wheel when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

the 360 camera and park assist comes standard in Canada, I use the 360 camera everyday and find it very usefull, would have bought it even if it was not a standard feature, the park assist is more of a "cool" feature rather than one which I would use daily, I try not to park on side streets as much as possible.

Yes, I use the Parktronic sensors every day (front and back) in many different circumstances. I regularly use the 360 camera just to be sure I am centered when parking in our office garage. Spaces can be tight. I find the backup camera to be of very high value as well. Yes, the parking assist was a fancy feature that, in retrospect, is not that important or needed. Actually, I am more into having the right side mirror drop down when putting the car into reverse. The only feature that I think I shouid have gotten that I did not get is curve assist. Now, since I never even had a chance to FEEL it in action, I am only guessing that I might find it of value. I am not a zoom around the corners kind of guy! It is good to leave a reason to get a new GL down the road! :-)

So, at this point: Lighting package and Parktronic sensors represent a 10/10 in my book. Also, the way the rear camera works with those guide lines is very useful once you get used to them.

+1

Those systems provide enough ability for me to avoid running into something.
