Hood rattle?

Hood rattle?
Hello all,
Just took delivery of my GL550 late this evening. Pictures will be posted asap. However, I noticed a slight rattle when you push down on the hood (passenger) side. I opened the hood and noticed that latches appear to be loose but not the fasteners. Anyone else notice slight rattle of the hood when you push down?
Thanks!

i felt the exact same thing on both sides, its very minimal but i can feel it on both sides.
Mercedes has always had it shut tight on all models- i'm not sure if it needs a setting or its made like that intentionally to prevent a hard closing..
i gotta speak with my service but havnt had a chance yet

The first time I opened my hood there was a hissing sound but not a rattle, I was told that it was the shocks/jacks that hold up the hood and they were brand new so they made a noise ( have only opened the hood twice). Do you mean when you close the hood it still rattles? like a something is not tight?

no no - theres no rattle when closed... once i close it and kinda push down on each side i can feel it still move some and a slight rattle, but it doesnt rattle or make noise once closed... its tight but can still be pushed down slightly.. the hiss is totally normal with Mercedes- its been like that forever.. they all make that hiss when opened

not the right thread but for the most part turning the entire pin to either side locks or unlocks and opens it where you can pull out the bulb and place in the new one

I got the same thing on my mazda 3 as well, there is a space which I am guessing is 1mm or less from when you close it...but I dont get any rattle from any of the two cars or rather I dont hear any rattles inside from the hood

Glad to hear i am not alone. I dont hear the hood rattling when i am driving. Its only when i push down when i was washing and waxing the hood. Passenger side has more play than driver side. I am sure i will have a few more bugs so i will leave it be for now. Slight off tangent but do you guys slam the hood shut or just gently push it down once the hood latches? Thanks

yup- thats exactly what i feel too..
as for closing- i did the same thing wher i brought it close then push- apparently that can and does cause some denting of that part of the hood and i was taught years ago that bring it to where it meets the latch and then just drop it so it locks across and closes properly otherwise sometimes the push isnt enough power as the drop and it doesnt close and lock properly- and ofcourse theres the big thud- but it definitely prevents dents...

Not sure about MB but my other cars have rubber stoppers that raise or lower when you twist them. They are on both far sides under the hood so you can adjust them to prevent any hood deflection.

Whoa cowboys - your hood is fine - the latch system is different from old school - that "rattle" you here when you "push down" - the front latch is partially designed that way so in even of medium front collision - front stays latched - but allows a bit of front pivot upwards - when rear hinges "pop up" - a bot more sophisticated that what you think.
Again - perfectly normal.
Also - on a "new" Mercedes - clea rcoat technology has radically changed from old school - best to use a polymer sealant as base on the clear coat - then apply light carnuba on top of the sealant - no buffing required but more importantly the polymer sealant binds much better to the updated clearcoat than wax does - and the wax binds much better to the sealant than it does to the clear coat - again, with fresh car no buffing, no abrasives, the sealant "fills/smooth" the harder clear coat used now.
Keep the beat !

that makes sense- i knew there was a reason and this is it..
hmm- didnt know about the binding of carnuba would be different to sealant compared to the clear coat- and yea you'r absolutely right the clear coat nowadays is def harder and i think better than before - thats why the hard/harsh feel when you rub your hand over it.. filling with sealant makes sense..
thanks!

fabbrisd1 - great info thank you. I thought it was normal but just wanted to double check. One thing that bothers me is how one side makes more "rattle" than the other. Overall, absolutely zero noise while the car is moving. Only when I purposely try to shake the hood
Sorry for the bad picts but here'a a couple - black on black. Front tint is 35%.

Not much at all.
1. easy entry
2. park assist
3. dark headliner
4. washer warmer
Looking back Designo would have been a very nice to have but just couldn't justify $4k... The car is great so far (100 miles). Only complaint (if you can even call it that) are:
- owners manual is a bit difficult to follow. Or I need to take up reading comp and need more time to carefully read
- small squeak in the headrest (2nd row) when it's up

I might suggest you download the pdf Owners manual and COMAND manual from mbusa.com Owners Support area.
I would also suggest you register on Owners Online - also in the Owners Support section - that way with any announcements. service updates, etc - Mercedes can email you directly and you don't have to wait for snail mail
