IR Glass (Infrared Glass) special order removed?

I checked the special order list and no longer see the IR glass option which we got on our 2011 450 model. I was skeptical about the option but I've been amazed how it reduces the interior temp of our car.

Does anyone know if this is still orderable as special order in the 2014 model? Perhaps it comes bundled with the 3 zone ac now? I saw it as standard equip on the 2013 gl550 (not on gl450) but not on the 2014 model. Thx

DP.

2013/2014 GL's have a new type of glass both windshied and side windows in addition to higher noise blocking I am told are more UV and IR resistant than X164 glass.

My personal expereince is that the X166 glass does a better job than any MB sedan except the S-Class thru 2013.

That said - you can choose to block 99.9% of the remaining UV and over 90% of the remaining IR with 3M Crystalline wndow tint film - which is also available in clear.

"Most" tint installers will say "my brand window tint blocks the same" - but the fact is the 3M Crystalline is superior in my experience - I have customers install their "90% clear" film - application looks clear-clar" on several windshield applications in C and E class sedans - and they are very-very happy.

Have had 1-2 GL applications for side windows and pano sunroof's due to customer's desire to eliminate all UV for their children.

Keep the beat !

I used 3M's Color Guard on the driver and passenger windows as it seemed to be the best color match (35%). Then used 50% Crystalline on the 3rd row Panoroof (no shade for some reason)

So far, it's working in SoFl summer heat/sun

Resurrecting an old thread. I'm in the market now to replace my wife's '07 gl450, which had this specific option (Infrared Glass), and her 'absolute must have' list contains this option as it's done so well here in Houston summers for her.

I see '841- multi layer window' as a standard on the 550, but not on the 450. Any idea if this is even an option for the 450? If not, are the front glass just regular glass, or did they truly change even the base glass?
Thanks!
Jake

Thanks for clarifying. Question- have you been able to do any side by side comparison of internal cabin temps between a gl550 with infrared glass and the gl450 with crystalline 99% tint on front windscreen and driver/passenger windows?

I'm in a conundrum as my wife is completely fixated on this option (infrared glass) and since the '13 450 doesn't come with it, we are almost forced to get the '13 550 to get the infrared glass option.

Thoughts/advise?
Thanks!

There is some real confusion on the "glass" between 13/14 GL450+550 - glass is the same, privacy is slighly darker 2nd row tint - the new generation glass for the GL is both morwe IR/UV blocking that 1st gen GL + more "acoustic" blocking with new tech material plasitc is the glass sandwich.. you only gain on all fronts on glass with new gen GL and compared to 1st gen GL - and the new gen GL glass is actually thinner..

I was told my Sunpass (Toll Reader) was not working because of the MB IR resistant glass. Has anybody else heard of this? When I go through the toll booth the scanner does not "read" my transponder in my upper center windshield. We have toll by Tag so they still bill me but just cant read my tag as I drive through.

Well, a few things incl EZ Pass Placement

If anyone needs a "reason" to move up to a GL550 - king of the road - go for it !

1) Crystalline blocks 97% of the IR and reduces conductive heat transfer by over 60% - frankly awesome..

2) ON EZ Pass placement - see attached from the Owner's Manual - see comments about "spotting" the area from outside the windshield best done on a stepladder in front of the GL

On my '07 GL, to the left of the rear view mirror (so on driver side) there is a small 'window' where you can attach the tag, this window doesn't have the IR film and is also where radar goes. Hope this helps.

the diagram from the manual that fab posted is accurate.

i use the area just to the right (when inside the car) of the rearview mirror for our community gate transponder.

I am confused. I think that the ir windshield is only available on the GL550 and not an option on any other GL or Ml. What has been the typical price to do the windshield with 3m crystalline? How effective is the 3m compared to the ir windshield?

Please don't be confused - all GL windshields are IR blocking - yes, GLK550 glass is "best" blocking - both X166 glass is better generation than prior - new school performance

3M Crystalline reduces any remaining IR by another 90% - which is again, added new tech.

With or without crystalline - you are "better" than old tech - with crystalline added you can withstand a solar flare.

No "really" much more than standard tine - just the windshield is a bit bigger - and only 3M shops have the material - non 3M shops say "we have something as good"
