I'm not 100% sure (best to call the dealership), but it looks to be the air inlet duct.

bringing up an old tread. Now my dealer has replaced this once for me under warranty. It is broken again, or I should say, the soft black part has ripped like paper. Getting another one will lead to the same issue I think. These air intake pipes are designed poorly.
Wondering if there is any other option? Can I use flex tape or aluminum tape that is used for HVAC inside homes? How about bathroom fan vent pipe. They have a metal ring that could be bent to fit inside the oblong side as well as the circular side.
Any thoughts?

I wouldn't use any aftermarket made intake hose or try to duct tape it up. I would replace it as I think the manufacturers and "engineers" designed this way for extra air to be sucked in through the perforated cloth on the hose.

Same issue here, when I saw your thread I checked mine and sure enough the drivers side intake was tore in two spots, for who knows how long. I put blue tape around both spots to at least keep the intake intact until the part comes in.
Appreciate the post.

on my E63 the previous owner was a pilot and an A&P certified Mechanic, he fashioned new ducts from aircraft ducting... that stuff was indestructible compared to what Mercedes uses... I believe I will try to do that if the ducts on my GLS ever deteriorate.

Don't mistake engineering designs from Benz in the good years, to Benz now.
Previously, it was designed "for a reason" and because it was trying to be quality.
Now, so many parts are clearly designed to fail, to offset margin pressure from regulations in the EU and also to encourage owners to just trade it in for a new lease. Another example of this is the brittle, plastic turbo coolant lines (that just turn to plastic conveniently as they approach the engine block with all its heat) - absolutely no good reason to do this and not to mention a very tedious repair with the engine in the vehicle. These are not accidents or good intentions.
