2016 Mercedes GL550 Exhaust Rattle

2016 Mercedes GL550 Exhaust Rattle
On top of my front end woes I got home today from my haircut and the exhaust is making some crazy noises. It sounds like an exhaust heat shield, should be easy to fix, anyone else had/have an issue like this? I feel like my car is falling apart and it's only 5-months old.

I may be in the same boat as you. After driving about 1500 miles on a road trip, and we're still under 5k total mileage, our GL450 makes quite the racket when we start it cold. Once it gets a little heat in the exhaust system, it quietens down. We'll be taking it to the dealership when we get back home.

2006 Toyota Tundra, 2013 Mercedes GL550
My 2013 550 makes a similar rattling sound, somewhere under and/or around the engine compartment. At first, I thought that was normal with these GLs...sounds kinda like a Diesel on startup, with rattles and clacks, but does improve and quiet down after engine is hot.

We were also having throttle response issues and uneven transmission shifts that also went away after taking the vehicle to the dealer. I'm not sure what else they may have re-programmed or tweaked.

What you are describing sounds more like the chain tensioner issue that is common with early 450 and 550. When the engine starts, there is no oil there, so it rattles. Once the oil circulates, the rattle goes away.
There is a TSB on it, instructing the service dept to replace the chain tensioner and check valve with improved parts.
I had this issue with my 2013 gl450. After having this service done the startup is quiet.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL550
so my GL550 doesn't sound like THAT... but I came to the forum just now to ask about the lack of smoothness in the exhaust note when it idles. Drives perfectly fine. Sounds fine while driving. Just got the car so I have no baseline to compare it against. It has 47K miles. I may post a sound clip.

It's a heat shield and still haven't gotten it fixed... lol. It only happens after spirited driving or going up steep hills then idling. Maybe once a week or less I may hear it. Otherwise she's really smooth. Best V8 ever, she's such a beast. After I get back from Canada I'll have them check... it's so hard to reproduce and doesn't happen often enough to ruin my day.

2016 GL450
Had our '16 GL450 in for its first A service yesterday. Have been noticing the rattle again. Service mgr. says it is the catalytic converter making the noise until it heats up. Swears that he had someone demo the sound on a new GL on the lot that did the same thing. That's a new on one on me, but it doesn't bother me enough to pursue it further.
