Hankook tires - early report

I just had Hankook Ventus S1 EVO2 SUV tires installed at local tire place for $259/tire, about $100/tire less than Continental Crosscontact UHP's, and a $100 rebate as well. Thus far I like the tire - no heavy road noise, no vibrations as others had reported early on with Pirelli's. I'll report back again in a few weeks, but nice to have a decently priced performance substitute for the Conti's. I had Hankooks on my RS6, and they were great.

PS - interestingly, last week they were $247/tire in-stock on Tire Rack, today they are $290 "special order"

I had Hankook's on my S600 and loved them. So much cheaper than Michelin's and performed every bit as well. I've got new Conti Xcontacts on my rig that the dealer put on just prior to my purchase. Even though they are MB specific tires, they are very noisy and slippery as hell. I'm fairly certain they are high performance summer tires and not really meant for winters. I regularly get all 4 wheels spinning with those tires on dry roads and give traction control a helluva workout. Once these tires are cooked in about 10k miles (that's about all they are good for on these heavy beasts), I'll either try the Hankook's or Conti DSW's. A guy I know has the DSW's and they seem to be much quieter and offer a more compliant ride than the Xcontacts.

I just noticed that those Hankook's have a treadwear rating of only 220 and are summer rated only. You're going to cook through those tires almost instantly with your beast. I wouldn't try taking them out in the snow if I were you. The Pirelli Scorpion All-Season Plus are listed at just $268 on TireRack and have a 500 treadwear rating. I'd try those before I'd spend money on those Hankook's. They should last almost twice as long and are cheaper than the Hankooks. Should be OK in snow too.

Thanks Dave, hadn't noticed the tread wear, my bad. As regards snow, I have separately mounted snows, so not an issue.

I have the Conti DSW's and I absolutely love them. I came from the Pirelli Scorpions All-Season. The DSW's are much quieter and seem to handle just as good in winter conditions compared to the Pirelli's. Just my 2 cents.

Do you have 20 inch wheels. If so did you go different size than the OEM with Conti DWS06?
I could not find them in the OEM 20 inch size

He has a GL550, so they are 21" wheels.

UPDATE: Just did first true road trip on the Hankooks, I must say that I continue to be impressed. No appreciable increase in noise at hwy speeds (~80), and no vibration. Found myself in a deluge for about one hour with heavy winds as well ... tracked straight, and seemed to diffuse water much better than my Conti UHP's had. Let's see what happens with wear, but so far, so good in other respects.

I'm definitely never going back to the UHP's after I finish burning the tread off of them. The rubber seems very hard as I get all 4 wheels spinning very easily, even on completely dry roads....and they are pretty damn loud and not very compliant. They feel just like run-flats. I can't believe these are MB specific tires.
